Here’s a little story, that captures perfectly the vibe around transforming the City in Toronto. Would be really nice to have a new Mayor with a different modus operandi than we have seen over the past decade:

When I was Chief Planner, we created an ambitious cycling plan (the minimum grid) that I could not get on the council agenda (sad, but I was reaching. Ford was Mayor). One councillor told me that it would be really bad for the film industry to have bike lanes everywhere.

So I went to the film office and asked if this was true, with the thought that we could create a strategy to mitigate this. But instead I was promptly told that streets with bike lanes were highly desirable filming locations - because Toronto is often a stand in for other cities. And other cities have bike lanes.

Anyway, not long after that, sure enough, I noticed a Toronto bike lane as the background shot to a street scene in an episode of Suits….

Here, the beautiful Shaw St - one of our best cycling corridors. Because we can do good things. We just need a Mayor who wants to do them at scale, and without the hullabaloo.

That’s interesting because Mayor Brown stated publicly that he put forward a motion for someone other than Ahmad. Not to be funny, but I’m not certain he’s in your community’s corner either.

all of the reforms failed at the same damn time - black cops, body cameras, multiple cops on the scene, tasers instead of guns- so how is more reform the answer?
#Blacker cops? Even non-deadlier non deadly weapons? ten cops instead of five? HD body cameras? harder convictions?

Apparently she was leading a lesson on Orange Shirt Day and said something like “why is it ok to call Indigenous people Aboriginal, but not Black people n1@@er? It’s basically the same thing”. When kids challenged her to not say it, she doubled, then tripled, then quadrupled down
