#OTD in 1946, USS Brooklyn went in commission in reserve and was chosen to be mothballed using new techiques, becoming the first ship of the post-WWII "ghost fleet". The preservation efforts were effective and the cruiser was sold to Chile in 1951 where it served for 41 years.
