Abacha is trending because UK’s Jersey is set to return another loot of $9.5M (£7M) linked to late President Sani Abacha, to be used for the usual ultra modern infrastructure.

All Abacha Loot Recoveries:

1. 1998 — $750M.
2. 2000 — $64M from Switzerland.
3. 2002 — $1.2B from family.

4. 2003 — $160M from Jersey, UK
5. 2003 — $88M from Switzerland.
6. 2005 — $461M from Switzerland.

7. 2006 — $44M from Switzerland.
8. 2014 — $227 million from Liechtenstein.
9. 2018 — $322 million from Switzerland.

10. 2020 — $311 million (US and Jersey).
11. 2022 — $23 million from United States.
12. 2026 — $9.5M from Jersey, UK.

Unlike the $311M in 2020, that was moved to USA and moved to UK to dampen its trail..

This recent $9.5M funds have been lying in a Jersey account for years. It was discovered during the Goodluck Jonathan regime, but legalities held its repatriation.

Now after investigations, in 2024, The Royal Court of Jersey British Crown Dependency ruled that;

The funds are from a corrupt scheme, diverting federal funds from Nigeria for the benefit of some senior officials and associates. So technically, they are not entirely an Abacha’s personal loot.

What has been done with the money?

Well, under Obasanjo, they deposited the loot recovered to every Nigerian’s bank account :) Goodluck Jonathan’s regime said they’d invest the money for Nigerians to benefit future generations :).

In 2018, Reps raise questions, saying they’d can’t see how the monies was used.

2020, SERAP filed a FOI request, demanding records of the disbursement or spending.

The then AGF, Abubakar Malami replied, saying the government had no record of how they spent the recovered loot from 1999 to 2015.

The funds recovered under Muhammad Buhari was used for; Abuja-Kano Expressway, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, and the Second Niger Bridge.

Abacha’s widow, Maryam has repeatedly said, her husband was saving the money for Nigeria. But after he died, the money vanished.

Jersey British Crown Dependency is not part of UK. It is an Island near France with its own government. But the British monarch is its Head of State. They depend on the UK government for defence and foreign affairs.
