Theater and movies are different. Even though actors who feature in the theater drama oftentimes also appear on the movie set, they are not quite the same genre.

Hubert Ogunde was a legend. Like, the father of modern Nigerian theater and Yoruba traveling theater.

Here’s the quick breakdown:

Who was he?
Hubert Ogunde (1916 – 1990) was a Nigerian actor, playwright, theater manager, musician, and activist.

Why is he important?
1. Father of Nigerian Theater
He started the first professional Yoruba traveling theater company in 1944. Before him, drama in Nigeria was mostly church-based or amateur. He made it a full profession.

2. Pioneer Filmmaker
He was one of the first to put Yoruba stage plays on film. Movies like Aiye, Jaiyesimi, Ogunde's King are classics. He basically laid the foundation for what we now call Nollywood.

3. Music + Drama Combo
His plays always had music, dance, and social commentary. Very entertaining but also used to criticize colonial government and social issues.

4. Activist
He used theater to fight for independence and speak truth to power. The colonial government even banned some of his plays.

Legacy
Almost every big Yoruba actor today grew from the "Ogunde school". People like Akin Ogungbe, Oyin Adejobi, Lere Paimo all worked with him.
He died in 1990, but he’s still called The Guru.

So when people say "Ogunde", they’re talking about the man who started it all for stage and screen in Nigeria.
