Maharashtra: 210 sugar mills receive crushing licences for 2026–27 season
The Maharashtra government has issued crushing licences to 210 sugar mills for the upcoming sugarcane crushing season, including 104 cooperative and 106 private mills that have paid 100% of the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) to farmers.
The state has permitted mills to begin crushing from October 15. However, some mills in Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara districts are likely to start operations ahead of the scheduled date.

Sugar Dealers: Government cuts stock holding period to 15 days
The Government has reduced the stock holding period for sugar dealers to 15 days and fixed the stock holding limit at 1,000 quintals.
The revised limits will be effective from October 15 to November 30, 2026, with Kolkata and its extended metropolitan areas and Assam excluded from the order.

Maharashtra: NFCSF seeks financial support for sugarcane farmers and mills amid drought concerns
The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) has sought financial assistance from the Maharashtra government for sugarcane farmers and sugar mills ahead of the 2026–27 crushing season.
Citing drought conditions, lower cane availability and the likelihood of reduced sugar recovery, NFCSF president Harshavardhan Patil has demanded ₹1,000 per tonne for sugarcane farmers and ₹500 per tonne for sugar mills to help offset the impact of lower recovery.

India has rejected Australia’s counter-notification at the World Trade Organization (WTO), which alleged that India had exceeded the 10% product-specific de minimis limit for sugar support over the past 11 years.

Uttar Pradesh’s sugar industry is facing growing pressure as red rot disease continues to affect the once-dominant Co-0238 sugarcane variety.

India’s ethanol industry is facing a growing supply-demand mismatch as production capacity expands rapidly.
