@SpencerFernando > Why should we settle for less, for limits, for a closed vision of what is possible?
Because we've already seen the vision where no limits exist and we're already paying the costs for little benefit.
It's a vision of desperation for most for the egos of a few.
@DougSaunders@_eleanorina Any account of the housing crisis that doesn't include NIMBYism, urban concentration, land, raw materials on the supply side and can be solved with more capital from PRs and a bit of labor is absurd.
Try talking to anyone outside of Ontario about this, or anyone in the trades.
@DougSaunders@_eleanorina The article does not begin to address the housing crisis in a serious way.
When this happens again and causes all the same problems even though we did it 'right', I hope you will reflect on it then.
@DougSaunders@_eleanorina A shortage of trades is a trend you can slow with immigration, not reverse, and it is not the only structural problem holding back supply.
There is no will to solve the other structural problems. Increasing immigration under those circumstances is irresponsible and self serving.
@duncanreyburn Philosophy is worth something, religion is too. Harts thoughts about the human soul might be worth something but his thoughts on consciousness and AI are not.
This is a misapplication of theology.
@tommybean37 @ADectis@johnarnold He addressed the part of the question which was reasonable to answer which was "what could the government do to raise fertility", which presupposes that they should.
Yes the world is fucked up, trying to "solve" this problem won't make it less fucked up.
@tommybean37 @ADectis@johnarnold No shortage of workers means wages are too low. Do you think the state should be printing more money for more fake jobs or to pay people to have more kids in a country of 1.4 billion? You are a ghoul if you think that is a good idea.
@TheELongWave@steinqiu Absolute numbers matter. Credit is relevant to housing prices, it's not relevant to rents which also spiked and helped fuel the bubble, up until population growth slowed.
Credit is part of the story, it's not the whole story.
@Shouldnotbeonx@globeandmail Wages go up, homelessness and rents go down, and eventually people can afford to have kids again.
It's a shame the left today cares more about calling people racist than the working class.
There is a reason labor unions used to oppose open borders.
@RVJS8@JohnPasalis The same reason producing more cars will not have much impact on the price of entry level housing, which is that most people aren't desperate enough to live in them yet.
Hopefully it stays that way.
@Will_Tanner_1 This is a false dichotomy. One can believe that a political culture of minority aliens should not feel entitled to assert itself over foreign territory, regardless of which system is better.
If it's not stable, it's not superior. The consent of the governed is not optional.
