@mlara008 @dcmireles I agree that the NCAA inhibits student athletes from expressing themselves due to heavy regulations. Without an ability to pursue outside passions, the NCAA is really doing a disservice to their student-athletes
@emilytoma003 @dcmireles most SA’s aren’t on full scholarships and have to get loans, bc there is not enough time to pursue employment outside of their sport. not compensating SA’s is simply unfair bc they are not given the opportunity to earn money for themselves bc of the restrains of college athletics
without knowing, many student athletes inadvertently sign away their ability to receive anything from anyone that is not family. can’t imagine not being able to accept gifts from friends or family friends just bc it may be considered an “extra benefit” @dcmireles #UCR50
when most people think about Title IX they think about gender equality, but Title IX spans beyond this scope, to include sexual harassment and sexual violence in education @dcmireles #UCR50 https://t.co/9Fa00fhm2k
@blieu002 @dcmireles I think boycott are most effective when those boycotting are unafraid of the consequences. I think in most cases with college athletics, the consequences outweigh the potential result. #UCR50
@afabr001 @dcmireles I think having more coaches of color would be beneficial bc it would be easier for coaches to empathize with their players while also establishing credibility through shared experiences that expand beyond the sport #UCR50
Title IX did an excellent job 2 decrease the gender disparities in college sports, but has not addressed the racial inequities that female-SA’s face. W/black female SA’s primarily in2sports(WTF&WBB), isolation from others seems inevitable @dcmireles #UCR50 https://t.co/v0WOnbnxG8
@Olivia_Villa_18 @dcmireles I think if the NCAA doesn’t already regulate the maximum amount of concussions one can receive without having to stop participation in their sport, then they should. Concussions are one of the main injuries that have life altering consequences if not taken seriously
@blieu002 @dcmireles I don’t think raising the minimum GPA to enter college is necessary. Ones GPA nor test score isn’t a good measure of their college readiness. I think the NCAA could require college prep course for incoming it’s freshman
@ryan_aranda003 @dcmireles I think this point is interesting, because in conversations I’ve had, many people downplay the significance of an athletic program to the overall appeal of a school. Athletic programs help to build school spirit which can shape a campus climate
Coach Val is unique in her profession, bc she is a coach that encourages her athletes in EVERY part of their lives. As a coach she creates a positive athletic climate, which is often thought of to be rare. @dcmireles #UCR50 https://t.co/exG9N1dSXL
@mlara008 @ljohn014 @dcmireles Do you realize that not all SA’s get their tuition paid for? Most SA’s are not on full ride scholarships, and have to figure out how to pay for the remainder of their school balance, w/o having the time to work and offset the cost. #UCR50 https://t.co/0gEzXudTXR
@Jmart119ucr @dcmireles If you are referring to a time or “additional pressure” discrepancy, one would only fairly supplement that with an easier GPA requirement which would not help the educational mission of the institution nor the NCAA, if minimum GPA requirements increase, it should increase for all
@Michaela_Rose98 @dcmireles do you think it would be difficult to focus on “getting a good education” if students can’t afford to feed themselves? Or are unable to work because they practice upwards of 20 hours a week?
@akim_122 @dcmireles I think male athletes have a greater opportunity to go pro before they graduate (MBB-1year & MFB-3years) and take the opportunity when presented, which could explain the disparity in the graduation rates
@Jmart119ucr @dcmireles Do you think it’s fair for universities to place heavier academic regulations on student-athletes over non student-athletes. Why do you think their academic standards should be different?
How can college athletes be expected to commit equally to their acad &sport, when they feel isolated from their campus comm and accepted into their athletic comm? It’s a big ask to expect anyone to commit to something where they feel unsupported/unwelcomed https://t.co/ixehc2xVnC
@xobaby_bria @dcmireles Not all SA’s on full scholarship rides and some are on no scholarship at all, but they still have to dedicate as much time&energy as those on full scholarship. + the time consumption that college sports takes, leaves SA’s w/little to work to fund their primal needs
