@EddieComeaux It’s sad that in today’s culture we need a celebrity to bring problems like this into the public eye. LeBron James is keeping big orgs. like the NCAA accountable for their corruption & he is sure to face backlash for it. We need more people like this to step up. #Athletics
@_jsant027 @dcmireles Athletes mental health is extremely important and the transition out of the athletic sphere should begin as early as their first year on campus. When their lives revolves around the athlete image, it can be hard for them to develop a new identity outside of athletics. #UCR050
It can be difficult to transition out of being a competitive athlete. When your whole life revolves around one thing then you can lose site of yourself without that one thing. Identity crisis is very common among athletes. @dcmireles #UCR50 https://t.co/X869dhhqMz via @espnW
@nmcdo001 @dcmireles Student athletes are supposed to be students first, but these rules single them out. Everyone should have rights to their names and student athletes should be treated the same as everyone else. The NCAA has these rules to protect them but in reality they are limiting them. #UCR50
Athletes must sign a contract before they can play. How is it legal to sign their names away? Universities make money off their athletes. Since it’s their only option I can see why athletes ignore the problem in order to play. #UCR50 @dcmireles https://t.co/i81VyZgeSn
@k_helen14 @dcmireles Title IX was the first step to equality. However little change has been made since then. Male coaches salaries are sucking the funding from athletic departments and women are being pushed out. If this isn’t a sign of inequality I don’t know what is. #UCR050
There are many problems that cultivate inequality in athletic programs. However, we let it happen by not supporting these amazing women. If more people watched women’s sports then they would be treated better.#UCR050 @dcmireles The N.C.A.A.’s Women Problem https://t.co/l9J2ZxkuUK
@emilytoma003 @dcmireles It doesn’t seem like colleges are doing much to fix the racial issues that their athletes face. Most sports are either a majority white or a majority Black, which keeps many athletes segregated. If teams were more diverse it would show a need for more minority coaches.#UCR050
The dynamic of athletic programs needs a change. It’s astounding how low graduation rates are for Black athletes in comparison to everyone else. Schools shouldn’t look at Black athletes as money makers. They should be seen as students. #UCR050 @dcmireles https://t.co/YHCmI2qkso
@Olivia_Villa_18 @dcmireles A friend of mine had to deal with the consequences of 3 concussions and it was a major hurdle she had to deal with. College athletes already have to deal with the stress of balancing their hectic schedule and concussions only make it more difficult for them. #UCR50
There's more to health than the physical aspect. Student athletes face the stress of winning games, going to class, and getting good grades. When an athlete is injured its all hands on deck. The problem is that no one pays attention to their mental health. @dcmireles #ucr50
@nmcdo001 @dcmireles Student athletes sacrifice a large amount of time, however that’s their choice. I agree they don’t always get a fair deal. Still the point of college sports shouldn’t be to get paid, it should be to get a good education while still being able to compete at a high level.#UCR50
The media questions whether or not college athletes should get paid. When we should all be questioning if these students are getting a good education. These athletes should be seen as students first. If they didn't want an education they would try to go pro. @dcmireles #ucr50
@Brenda_Monge_Re @dcmireles I agree that salaries for coaches are incredibly high. Whether the student athletes get paid is definitely debatable. Personally I think that money from salaries should go to improving college programs. This way every student would see improvement instead of just athletes. #UCR50
@cnguy124 @dcmireles Athletic programs can be really helpful for some students. In high school, I played several sports and it was a great way to relieve stress in a healthy way. However, I also believe that some schools take athletic programs too seriously and it can affect the athletes education.
Why should coaches receive million dollar salaries? College athletes are the ones on the court and in the classrooms, yet they don't see any of the revenue from huge tournaments such as March Madness. https://t.co/okZalD4rJ3 #ucr50 @dcmireles
@EvyFlores4 @dcmireles I agree that’s not quite fair that schools don’t have the same rules. However, I think we should also look at the students who aren’t athletes, but a work a full time job. These students have just as much work outside class, but professors don’t work around their schedules. #UCR50
There is a fine line between college and pro sports. Getting a college degree should be rewarded not punished. The NCAA is pushing college athletes to drop their education because of double standards on paying athletes. https://t.co/ZGAVJYaBGT via @CBSSports @dcmireles #UCR50
@ejohn016 @dcmireles I agree that the NCAA does protect against lawsuits for the most part. However, I believe the article makes a good point about the funding that goes into the athletic departments. The BTCFA might be able to decrease the costs of things like coach salaries and new stadiums. #UCR50
