🚨Global Extinction🚨

A BirdLife International co-authored paper published today has revealed the tragic loss of one of the world’s migratory shorebirds – the Slender-billed Curlew.🌊❌

This is the first known global bird extinction from mainland Europe, North Africa and West Asia.🌍

The last irrefutable sighting of the Slender-billed Curlew was in February 1995 in Morocco.🐦

This new study is a stark warning of the need to tackle the loss and degradation of inland grassland and wetland nesting areas and coastal wetland non-breeding areas, among other pressures.⏳

Urgent coordinated conservation action is critical to preventing further extinctions of migratory waterbirds.💧

News that bright up the week: during my 2020 fieldwork in south Estonia I stumble upon a recently hatched clutch of Redshanks. Together with @hannes_pehlak we quickly ringed them and moved on to our work. Mind-blowing to know one of them was recaptured in Sierra Leone on 31/1!

@Ilovejolloyd Guess the blackbird lined the thrush nest before the thrush got going laying, then they've laid (almost) simultaneously.. If they're all viable it will be a packed nest. Though no doubt will get predated before we find out!
