We are the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world. Eating out a few times a month, no matter your age or social standing, shouldn’t break the bank. That isn’t too much to ask for, nor is it a radical position.

Moreover, we shouldn’t expect young people (or others with lower incomes) to poison themselves with shit processed junk just to get by. We are better than this as a nation. And if we aren’t, we are royally screwed.

I think what this debate comes down to, fundamentally, is how do you view the average American citizen? Are they merely units of input and output in an indifferent economy, or are they the irreplaceable building blocks of our civilization?

If you subscribe to the former view, who cares if younger and lower class citizens have to eat shit just to get by? After all, they’re replaceable — and we can simply import their replacements when they inevitably succumb to cancer or suicide.

But if you subscribe to the latter view — that American citizens are the irreplaceable building blocks of our civilization — you understand the current situation is untenable. We must invest in our citizens, for they are the future. At the very least, we ought to use the powers of government to create an economy in which you don’t have to eat slop just to get by.
