In August, the president of the Malaysian Employers Federation said there is no need to extend the current 7 days of paternity leave as employers must bear these costs, and proposed the idea of shared parental leave.

"Spouses, upon mutual consent, should have the option to allocate a portion of the wife's maternity leave to the husband," said Dr Syed Hussain as reported by The Star.
