He does, however, include, via semi-ironic analogy, enough stereotyped figures from intellectual history to flatter the audience and give the series a sheen of erudition.
In #TearAlongtheDottedLine Zerocalcare perfectly reflects and captures through his art the anxious, overcaffeinated, media saturated, lonely, self-consciously narcissistic (and guilty about it) experience of the 'lost' millennials. #tvaestheticsgc
I feel at home, a nostos, in his world of and method of cultural reference, having grown up on the adult cartoons from which he inherits the fast barrage of cutaways into mise en abyme tangents of pop cultaral references.
The NGE namedrop, and his self-establishment as a bona fide twitter leftist, within the first few minutes was meant to disarm the ironic detachment characteristic of these communities, preparing us to accept the sentimentality.
@ImagEastFilms I think there's a misunderstanding. I'm referring to the flashback (12min) within the broader flashback to an event that was shown on screen only about four minutes prior (8min). It's obvious to the viewer from Ezequil's comment that he's referring to what we jusr saw...
(12min into ep5 of #3percent) the flashback to Ezequil's wife irresponsibly rejecting the candidate with a young daughter, an event we saw four minutes ago, is unnecessary. unsure how to read it: simply a blunder, patronizing, awkward, etc. #tvaestheticsgc
@TJeffrey9 I think it's partially attributable to a lack of creativity and variety in sets and a bland mise en scene. Excessive movement close-up is an attempt to conceal this lack in #3percent. #tvaestheticsgc
About 14min into ep4 of #3percent it really does not feel like they spent an entire day pulling levers for food: another awkward temporal oddity. #tvaestheticsgc
About halfway into ep3 of #3percent, finding it difficult to keep track of the passage of time. Appreciating how well (compared to this cafeteria) the great hall of beds worked in #SquidGame, a gound for a much cleaner structure. #tvaestheticsgc
I'm unsure if everything that has happened before they're put in the dorm elapsed over a single day. If so, it felt unnaturally long, with too many cafeteria visits.
@gianclm There is something liminal about it in both series, as Ezequiel ("conflicted by ideal extremes") points out. #ThePaper uses it as a rhythmic break, a fracturing of the suture at the peak of a character's dramatic crescendo. #tvaestheticsgc
@TJeffrey9 I feel the same way, and I was vocal about this in our discussion of #thepaper. Professor Lombardi talked about "the unsutured," although I am a little skeptical that this effect is necessarily intended or achieved. There are certainly other pernicious forces at play.
Something that works well in #ThePaper: fluid movement of plot. However, I think that a lot of time is wasted with lingering shots, and perhaps they could've made do with less than 12 episodes in season one by cutting filler. #tvaestheticsgc
The #Paper's unsteady camera rapidly panning from face to face in close quarters is nauseating. pls just cut. They're trying to capture a frantic experience, like the pulse of the news room and staff meetings, but the excess of movement is distracting. #tvaestheticsgc
Croatia's famed natural beauty is occasionally revealed, however hard the showrunners tried to conceal it by filming on dark and cloudy days. In ep. 5 Kardum takes a quick peek at the seascape view through the window of a cafe, and then we see a stunning sunset behind his mother.
