Colonialism is not an excuse, it is a fact. If anybody decides to do an independent umbiased analysys of our 70 years of development and wishes to ignore the impact of 83 years prior, he/she is entitled to that. He or she only needs to justify why.

Ghana was under direct British colonial rule for 83 years, from 1874 (1901 when you add Asante and the North) to 1957. We have now governed ourselves for nearly 70 years. Colonialism left deep scars, but how long can it remain the explanation for failures produced by our own choices, leaders and institutions? Discuss.

@GabbyDarko It is not an explanation. The problem lies with those who close their eyes and compare systems in 250 year old democracy to 70 years of interrupted and manipulated economies.
They also assume that at independence a country takes off like a rocket straight into the skies.

1. The Deputy CEO of GoldBod is Richard Nunekpeku.

2. Before his appointment, he founded a law firm, Sustineri Attorneys.

3. He subsequently became Deputy CEO of GoldBod and, according to information available, brought one of his associates at the firm, Abdul Gafaru, to serve as a defacto Board Member of GoldBod.

4. Interestingly, Sustineri Attorneys is also the law firm representing Sammy Gyamfi in his defamation suit against Afia Schwarzenegger.

5. Again, the Sustineri law firm are lawyers for Bawa Rock, the Sole aggregators for GOLDBOD

6. We are further told that Eric Adjei, the most idle CEO of the century who doubles as Sammy Gyamfi’s 'goro boy', undertook his pupilage at the same firm and is now an Associate there.

7. More importantly, there are questions about whether Richard Nunekpeku resigned his position as Founder of the firm when he accepted the Deputy CEO position at GoldBod. That is a matter that deserves clear public clarification. Information available indicates he did not.

8. The most striking issue, however, is that information available indicates that in 2025 alone, the law firm received approximately GH¢8.6 million in legal fees from GoldBod.

9. If these facts are accurate, then we have a serious conflict-of-interest question that cannot simply be brushed aside.

10. How does a Deputy CEO of a state institution connected to a law firm continue to have an association with that firm while the same firm is receiving millions of cedis in legal fees from the institution?

11. And how does this square with the government's own standards on conflict of interest, procurement and public accountability?

12. It is difficult to understand how GoldBod has a become such a lucrative source of business for people within the same network. When a law firm connected to a senior executive can reportedly earn GH¢8.6 million in a single year from the institution, Ghanaians are entitled to ask questions.

13. Stan Dogbe also justify why he furnished GoldBod's kitchen with microwave and hood and bought TV at those expensive price.

14. It seems GoldBod is the milking cow now, probably the 33rd cow that escaped death. So thry are not giving it any chance.

15. It also raises questions about whether the $1.7billion was genuinely loss.

16. Those who occupy powerful positions today should remember that public office is temporary. Power melts like ice. The people worshipping and defending you today may not be around when the tables turn.

17. So, rather than dismissing every question, insulting and denigrating people, the appropriate response is transparency.

18. And given the government's approach to accused persons and bail conditions, those entrusted with public office should be especially conscious that the standards applied to others may eventually become relevant to them as well.

Being able to trace gold to the pit of origin could be one of the most valuable things GoldBod delivers. But I have done some research and I am yet to come across a successful application of traceability at the scale of Ghana's ASM sector. Most of what I found were small pilots. So that worries me a bit.

We also have GANRAP, where the aim is to buy as much gold as possible. Right now we are buying gold without knowing the sources. How does GANRAP affect the effectiveness of traceability? When the volume target and the traceability rule pull in different directions, which one gives?

How would a traceability system deal with the risk of political interference? And since buyers are paid a commission based on the amount of gold bought, what does that incentive do to traceability?

There will also be gold that cannot be traced. What should GoldBod do with it? Refuse it, buy it at a discount, or buy it anyway?

I believe that even as GoldBod procures the technology, there must be significant public conversation on exactly how traceability will be done and how the key risks to its effectiveness will be addressed. It may even need to go to Parliament to discuss some of that detail, as @obiMpenaAustine suggested. Parliament could provide direction on how untraceable gold is to be handled.
