The historic city of Bath, Somerset (Roman Aquae Sulis) is famed for its ancient thermal pools, Georgian crescents and harmonious classical architecture. Its rugby stadium, however, has long been seen as a blight on its civic landscape, disfiguring the riverbank at the heart of the city and relegating the waterfront to a somewhat desolate and disconnected area.

Dismayed at the 'semi-industrial and mechanistic' designs for a new stadium proposed in 2023, Apollodorus Architecture – a studio specialising in classical and traditional design – opted to present an alternative vision for the stadium. Their self-funded counterproject is both a theoretical exercise and a provocation, hoping to ignite conversation and show that it is possible to ‘envision something better’.

Rather than a steel and glass rectangular box, Apollodorus Architecture have designed and proposed a classical Roman amphitheatre. Inspired by the curving arcades of the Colosseum; an oval Roman stadium for Aquae Sulis, one of the greatest towns of Roman Britain…
