@Samfr The commentary on Discovery is massively improved compared to Tokyo, when (iirc) the commentators didn't even know what a quick draw was.
Shauna is really good at explaining what to look for to understand why a climber succeed/failed on a move

and finally we asked six leading physicists to talk through how they think we will finally go beyond the standard model, and find new physics - written by @jonmbutterworth, @ClareBurrage, @AlexKeshavarzi, @MattStrassler, Surjeet Rajendran and Emily Adlam https://t.co/Dcbsm88M32
So much that is heart-breaking and infuriating in this.
For what we are doing to make Physics more diverse this stands out:
"Newman also needed a physics teacher. But as Potts told his senior leadership team: “You may as well just ask for a supermodel, it’s not going to happen.”
A year ago, I started following how the cost of living crisis was playing out at an Oldham school, checking in with the fantastic @NewmanRC_Head every few weeks. I ended up learning a lot about the British state, and its education system, to boot.

@holland_tom@TheRestHistory@britishlibrary Lovely episode! Was the reference to Tiglaf Pileser being a great name for a cat an Agatha Christie reference?

The only thing I've found that works, but you have to make sure to spray it everywhere, because the midgies will still find the spots you missed!
Hope the bites get better quickly!
@AstroMikeMerri@Quasilocal@cosmicpinot I don't disagree with your main point, but I'd also expect a PhD student to be able to spot an obvious counter example to your starting hypothesis ;-)
@AstroMikeMerri@Quasilocal@cosmicpinot This assumes the number of academics is fixed, which is not always true. We've seen a big expansion of HE in the UK in recent decades.
@malcfairbairn I think the problem here is that we try to do too many things with pdra funding. It's funding for early career researchers, it's funding (and hence career progression) for PIs and it's funding for institutions.
You can't do all three of those efficiently/well from a small pot.
Are you looking for a postdoc position, want to do something crazy like levitating things, but also want it to lead to useful technology? Then apply for this 3 year industry-funded position on building levitated sensors! @KCL_Physics@KingsNMES@KingsJobs
