DHCP Snooping is a security feature on a switch that makes sure only the real DHCP server can give devices IP addresses.
Here's why it matters.
When you connect your laptop or phone to a network, it asks, "Can someone give me an IP address?" The DHCP server replies with an IP address, a default gateway, and other network settings.
The problem is that any device can pretend to be a DHCP server. If someone plugs in a rogue DHCP server, it could hand out incorrect network settings, causing devices to lose internet access or even redirect their traffic.
DHCP Snooping prevents this by telling the switch which ports are trusted and which are untrusted:
Trusted ports are connected to the real DHCP server, so DHCP replies are allowed.
Untrusted ports are where normal devices connect. If a device on one of these ports tries to act like a DHCP server, the switch blocks it.
Think of it like a receptionist in an office. Only authorized staff are allowed to hand out visitor badges. If a random person starts giving out fake badges, security stops them immediately.
In simple terms: DHCP Snooping protects your network by making sure only the legitimate DHCP server can assign IP addresses, keeping rogue or fake DHCP servers from causing problems.
