Last week I spent a few hours at IIT Hyderabad — walking through TiHAN, their autonomous navigation and drone test bed, meeting with Prof. Malla Reddy, Head of the Institute’s Innovation Council, who has been building an end-to-end innovation pipeline on that campus, and talking with Paresh Mistry, a founder developing electric utility vehicles for street vendors. Field research for my new book, Innovation and the Future of India.

What struck me most wasn’t the infrastructure, though it is genuinely impressive. It was the people. Energetic, committed, and building against real headwinds. The facilities are there. The ambition is there. What is still being constructed is the ecosystem that allows all of it to function at the scale it deserves.

That gap between foundation and function is, in many ways, the central question this book is trying to answer. Grateful to BV Mohan Reddy, Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Hyderabad, for making this visit possible.
