The CHSAA sends prayers and condolences to the family and many friends of Lou Carnesecca.
Coach Carnesecca was a product of the CHSAA, having graduated from St. Ann’s Academy in 1943 and then returning to the school as their basketball coach after graduating from St. John’s University. He won the CHSAA City Championship in 1952 and then again in 1958 after St. Ann’s moved to Queens and became Archbishop Molloy High School. After winning that championship, Coach Carnesecca returned to St. John’s as an assistant to Joe Lapchick. He was succeeded at Molloy by Jack Curran.
Coach Carnesecca was always a great supporter of the CHSAA. He recruited countless players from the league and graciously made the gym that now bears his name available whenever the CHSAA needed to use it.
Coach Carnesecca was inducted into many Halls of Fame, but the CHSAA is very proud that he is a member of the CHSAA Hall of Fame as well.
Requiescat in pace.

"I would rather lose than watch kids play the way some kids play. They are always thinking about themselves. Me..me..me...So recruiting kids that love life and love the game and have a tremendous appreciation for when their teammates do something well- that's hard -really hard."
Catholic Faith and Education Guide Longtime Hoops Coach.
Great read about Barry “Slice” Rohrssen, a talented and successful head coach and assistant in college basketball at some of the biggest and best programs in the country. He shares tremendous advice and valuable perspectives.
“That’s one of the reasons why I coach — to serve others and help young men who were once in my shoes and served by great coaches who made themselves available.”

#Flashback March 1988.
One of the best teams in @CHSAA_NYC history, the St. Nicholas of Tolentine Wildcats out of Andrews Avenue & Fordham Road in the West Side of The Bronx had one of the best nucleuses of players. They had three @McDAAG selections, several Division I players and a first-round @NBADraft pick in the late Malik Sealy.
This team would finish 30-1 and would win the @CHSAA_NYC city championship, the @CHSAA_NYC Catholic state championship, the @NYSFederation Tournament and the @usatodayhss mythical National Championship, in which they would finish No. 1 in the nation.
No team in NYC basketball history has accomplished this feat ever since.
