So many coaches are considering leaving or have left in the last year. Here’s what’s happening and what we can do about it. https://t.co/U8zcsrgXss @mollygrisham@CoachFrese @TowsonFHCoachJ @iChampionWomen @coachsitch @FemaleCN@NCAA
People think positive thinking is: “I’m going to think positive and it will all magically work out.” But it’s actually, “Because I think positive I will take actions that make it work out.”
🗣️ NEVER COUNT THIS TEAM OUT!
Trailing 2-0 after two, @StOlafWHockey stormed back to clinch a spot in the #MIAC Playoffs with a 3-2 overtime win over Saint Ben's at a raucous St. Olaf Ice Arena!

“Leadership is lonely. When you’re a head coach, man, every decision has your name on it, and that weighs on you. The waves don’t stop coming. Some you can surf, and some just freaking crash on you.”
h/t @BrianLevenson for sending.

Old School - Only our athletes need mental well-being while our staff have their souls crushed in the name of ‘hard work’ and ‘competition’.
New School - Our staff are all high-performance knowledge workers and need the same enabling conditions as our athletes.
#Performance
Leaders who fail to listen ultimately find themselves surrounded by silence.
You don't get chosen to take charge unless you give good answers. You won't be able to make change unless you ask good questions.
Learning depends on making it safe for people to tell you the truth.
Emotion drives thought.
Thought drives behaviour.
Behaviour drives performance.
A widely accepted storyline in coaching.
The problem is, in reverse engineering performance, we stopped at behaviour.
We barely touch thought, and emotions scare us so we don’t bother with those.
Consider what is actually useful under pressure: calm, mindful, methodical, aware.
Consider what many expect to see from coaches under pressure: raging, mindless, flippant, “passionate”.
Performative =/= Performance
I honestly believe +/- 75% of people on most teams only have surface level interest in becoming a champion. They like the idea of the celebration, but hate the reality of the requirements. It takes mental skill and emotional strength to work like a champ before you’re a champ.
We need to do better than calling it "touchy feely coaching".
It's deliberately disparaging and emasculating.
Acknowledging emotion as part of the human condition and core element of peak performance is not touchy feely.
Quite the opposite, it's strong coaching.
