This #InternationalWomensDay, meet Mtendere, a 13-year-old student in Malawi who dreams of becoming a teacher so she can help others learn to read and write.
Girls like Mtendere face barriers that have nothing to do with ability and everything to do with circumstance. When girls are given the chance to learn, they help shape stronger futures for their communities.
Next week, TLFC grant recipient @Prof_LGichuhi will speak at #HNPW2026 on the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus and Education panel, exploring how to turn this framework into meaningful action.

In Ghana’s mining communities, many children face the difficult choice between school and unsafe work. Through our Reading Ghana Western Region program, CODE and partners are helping change that, reaching 12,500 students across 37 schools.
This year, 296 teachers strengthened their literacy instruction skills, classrooms were filled with culturally relevant books, and Grade 5 reading comprehension scores increased by 15% in project schools.

This year’s theme reminds us that youth are not just learners but co-creators and designers of multilingual education — both in the classroom and at home. When mother languages are valued and supported, learning becomes more inclusive, engaging, and empowering.

As #IDW2026 comes to a close, we’re reminded why CODE’s work matters, and why it matters now. In a world where cooperation and shared norms are under strain, what we build today in classrooms and communities shapes the stability, opportunity, and security of tomorrow.
Canada has long been a leader in international education. Stepping back is not neutral, it leaves space for others to set priorities that don’t reflect our values. When we pair principle with pragmatism, education remains one of the strongest tools we have for shared progress. Thank you to all who make this work possible.
