The EU Council, the body representing EU member state governments has approved a position that would let companies train AI on Europeans’ personal data without consent.
It would make AI training a recognised “legitimate interest” under GDPR one of the legal bases companies can use to process personal data without asking for permission under the current framework, AI training on personal data generally requires consent or a clear, specific legal basis this proposal shifts that.
what “legitimate interest” means in practice: the company decides that its interest in using your data outweighs your interest in not having it used.
The draft also proposes letting companies keep sensitive personal data that ends up in training sets “accidentally” if removing it would require “disproportionate effort.” with safeguards, but still.
Who benefits: companies that already hold large amounts of European personal data which are mostly American and Chinese AI firms.
Max Schrems’s framing: “digital expropriation.” Europeans’ data being taken and handed to companies without the people it belongs to having a say.
where it stands: the EU Council approved their position. the European Parliament must still agree. this is not law yet but the Council’s backing is a significant step.
🚨COLD CASE🚨
DNA evidence has just linked serial killer Ted Bundy to another murder from 1974.
17-year-old Melissa Ann Smith in Utah was murdered 52 years.
Smith's body was discovered by a hunter.
The long-cold case was closed using DNA matches to another Bundy victim and similarities in pattern, motive, and opportunity.
Bundy, executed in 1989, is confirmed to have killed at least 30 women and girls.
‼️ EU governments approved a GDPR change to let companies train AI on Europeans' personal data without consent.
It makes AI training a possible "legitimate interest", judged case by case. Parliament must still agree.
Max Schrems calls it a "digital expropriation" of Europeans.

@_Saretz I feel like old BioWare was akin to sitting down and reading a good book. I come in expecting an immersive world, tight pacing, memorable characters, exceptional dialogue, and story moments that last long after the game is done.
This is Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a single player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
Working on KOTOR was a defining experience of my career. This is a dream come true for me and our team of incredible storytellers and game makers @ArcanautStudios.
A full remake of Dragon Origins, in the style of Capcom’s remakes, would be amazing. I would do full remakes of DA 2 and DAI, much more dark fantasy (strip out MMO grind, add handcrafted content, expand on story). A complete redo of Veilguard into a proper Dreadwolf game.
@_Saretz I think that’s what people are actually complaining about when they say “woke.” The quality of writing. There were “woke” elements, you could argue, in Dragon Age Origins. But no one complained: writing was stellar. Characters were not surface deep. It’s a far cry from Veilguard
The Archdiocese of New York has reached a proposed settlement exceeding $800 million with 1,300 people who accused Catholic clergy members and lay leaders of sexual abuse, potentially allowing the church to avoid bankruptcy after years of litigation. https://t.co/fdZbA7t3qq
