This is highly problematic. What it does is it stereotypes the hijab as an essential part of a Muslim woman's identity when it clearly isn't. Not all Muslim women wear a hijab, why should the hijab then be considered as a marker of collective Muslim identity?

Furthermore, what all these debates completely miss is the fact that the hijab is essentially modesty wear, and the concept of modesty is disturbingly patriarchal, it considers a non hijabi woman as "immodest".

Just as much as the state discriminates against women wearing hijab, many Muslim families in India allow girls to go to school only if they wear the hijab. But that's seldom talked about!
