Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation is a hard-earned victory won by students who stood firm in the face of repression, and a major setback for the Union Government that chose to defend a discredited system instead of delivering justice.

But this struggle cannot end with one resignation. The NTA must be fundamentally restructured, and the fight must continue against the National Education Policy, which centralises power and undermines the rights of states. India deserves an education system that is transparent, accountable, and rooted in federalism.

Salute to everyone who fought this battle with courage and unwavering conviction.

I have seen videos of lathis with nails on them. Of plain-clothed men wielding lathis and mercilessly beating up students. Of name tags missing on cops.

The point is, this is a protest by young people. They don’t need the media to document their protest for them. There are thousands of videos floating around that showed what unfolded.

15 MPs from Left parties, including Amra Ram, K Radhakrishnan, John Brittas, Su Venkatesan, R Sachithanantham, V Sivadasan and AA Rahim visited Jantar Mantar today to protest the violence unleashed by the Delhi Police and the Central Armed Police Forces on students and youth who gathered yesterday to march to the parliament demanding the resignation of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and accountability for the complete failure of the education system.

The MPs expressed solidarity with the ongoing movement and their demand for the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhana, and also squarely held Union Home Minister Amit Shah responsible for the terror and brutality unleashed on the students and youth. The Union Government's repressive measures cannot suppress the growing anger and frustration of the people.

Today marks the 117th birth anniversary of Comrade EMS, one of the foremost leaders of the Communist movement in India, one of the founding leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and one of the most influential communist thinkers of the country and the world.

After leaving college in 1931 to join the freedom struggle, Comrade EMS devoted nearly seven decades to building the progressive and working class movement in India. A brilliant Marxist theoretician and a prolific writer, he made outstanding contributions to the application of Marxism-Leninism to Indian society and to working out the strategy and tactics of the Indian revolution. He served as the General Secretary of the undivided Communist Party from 1962-64 and of the CPI(M) from 1978 to 1992.

EMS represented the coming together of the two streams of the independence movement, the anti-imperialist and the anti-feudal struggles, which laid the foundations for the development of a powerful communist movement in Kerala. He was one of the key proponents of Aikya Keralam, which led to the formation of Kerala as a unified linguistic state in 1956. He served twice as the Chief Minister of Kerala, heading the first elected Communist ministry until it was dismissed undemocratically in 1959 and later leading a United Front ministry from 1967-69, thereby paving the way for the state's progressive transformation.

EMS lived a life of sacrifice and simplicity, spending three years in jail and six years underground. His leadership in rallying Left, democratic, and secular forces was invaluable. Comrade EMS set an example that has inspired tens of thousands of communists across the country.

Today marks the centenary of the birth of Norma Jeane Mortenson, the woman the world knew as Marilyn Monroe.

While the bourgeois press continues to gape at the ghost of a manufactured icon, the Communist Party of Britain reclaims the intellectual and the comrade.

Her politics were born of the assembly line. From the foster homes of Los Angeles to the Radioplane munitions factory, Monroe’s class consciousness was forged in the heat of proletarian survival. She was a woman of fierce intelligence, possessing an IQ that dwarfed the men who sought to manage her, yet she was reduced to a commodity to be bought, sold, and traded by the parasitic studio system.

The FBI files, which tracked her until her final breath, confirm what the establishment feared - a sex symbol who had read Marx and admired the Chinese Revolution. She was a militant anti-racist who used her platform to shatter the colour bar for Ella Fitzgerald, and she stood firm against the cowardice of the McCarthyite witch hunts when she married the blacklisted playwright Arthur Miller.

We must recognise that Monroe’s struggle was the intersection of class exploitation and patriarchal violence. She was a worker whose labour was her own body, super-exploited by a system that demanded she be beautiful and silent. Her life was a constant act of rebellion against the male gaze of capital. On her 100th birthday, we do not celebrate a "bombshell". We honour a clear-minded socialist who understood that the liberation of her class was inseparable from the liberation of her sex.

Happy Centenary, Comrade Marilyn. The struggle continues.

China has a bridge so tall the Empire State Building would fit underneath it, antenna and all, with about 600 feet of clearance left over. And it is one of more than 32,000 bridges in a single Chinese province.

The new record holder is the Huajiang Canyon Bridge in Guizhou, hanging 625 meters above a river. That is almost twice the height of the Eiffel Tower. The highest bridge in the United States, the Royal Gorge in Colorado, sits at 291 meters. Huajiang is more than twice that.

Guizhou is one of China's poorest provinces, and it holds 49 of the world's 100 tallest bridges. China overall has 9 of the top 10. Back in the 1980s, Guizhou had about 2,900 bridges total. Today the count is over 32,000 built or being built, more than ten times what it was forty years ago.

The bridge took 3 years and 8 months to build, at a reported cost of roughly $295 million. By comparison, the Golden Gate Bridge cost $35 million to build in 1937. Adjusted for inflation, that is around $777 million in today's dollars. Huajiang came in at about a third of that price, while sitting nine times higher above the water.

Tourism was baked into the design from day one. A glass elevator runs up one of the towers to a café perched 800 meters above the canyon floor. There is a glass walkway under the road, and a bungee jump is on the way. The province expects over a million visitors a year. The actual canyon crossing, which used to take two hours on twisting mountain roads, now takes about two minutes by car.

The reason for all this is geography. Guizhou has no flat land. The whole province is one long stretch of deep limestone canyons that cut villages off from each other and from the rest of China for centuries. Around 2010, Beijing decided the way out was to build infrastructure no matter what it cost. The bills are now coming due. Guizhou's debt sat at $388 billion at the end of 2022. One state-owned company behind 23 of the world's tallest bridges is paying around $800 million a year just in interest.

An American who runs a website tracking the world's tallest bridges estimates China is opening about 50 high bridges every year. The rest of the world combined opens around 10.

Really liked two points on how @ptrmadurai acknowledged he lost to a candidate who did not pay cash for votes, and the second thing about how govts fall because of inertia and by doing the same thing everyday. The former is indeed a revolution of a kind in TN politics, while the latter is relevant to all institutions and not just politics and administration. Inertia, lack of innovation and lack of adaptation to change is a biggest deterrent to growth anywhere.

Whether people like DMK or not, one thing is undeniable. They consistently opposed policies they believed would slowly reduce State rights and centralise more power with the Union Government.

People mocked, trolled and dismissed those concerns then. Today almost every issue they warned about is actively being debated across the country.

Meanwhile TVK continues maintaining silence or neutral stands on almost every major Union policy issue affecting Tamil Nadu.

Now TVK is in power.

Silence, neutrality and vague statements are no longer enough. Tamil Nadu deserves clear stands.

Will TVK oppose policies that affect the State’s rights and identity the way DMK did for decades Or will they adjust, compromise and stay comfortable with BJP ?

Real politics begins when BJP’s policies directly clash with Tamil Nadu’s interests.

Let’s revisit this later and see whether TVK resists, stays silent or eventually bends.

Time will answer everything.

My family has found her. I tried speaking to her on the call, but since she cannot speak, I spoke with the people who are currently around her. We are trying to help her from our end. As of now, they have only asked for ration so they have something to eat.

Since people are offering to help, I want to inform that there’s one issue, she does not have a bank account yet. We are trying to figure out the best possible way to help her further and will update once that is sorted.

PS: Since I am not in India at the moment, I will be helping her through my cousin who is reaching there shortly.
