Camborne in Cornwall has set a new national record for highest May minimum temperature with a low of just 21.4°C last night. This beats the Kenley Airfield figures from the previous two nights - 21.3°C & 19.4°C - and smashes the old May record of 18.9°C from 1947.
@Official_WXUK Ahh interesting! PWS here reached 31.6, seems as though Cardinham has also exceeded 30. Interestingly Mountbatten has been stuck at around 22/23 all day!
Land's End is at a rounded 30°C btw.
Easterly winds going over the West Penwith Moors definitely helping. An extraordinary day for any month of the year, let alone May.
28.6°C at 11am - insane.
4.1°C above the station May tmax record before this heatwave started.
0.9°C above the June tmax record - it has never been this hot locally in June before.
Fast approaching 30°C which has only ever been recorded in July and August 2022.
@muffmasterh As I’ve already said, the vast majority of stations in Cornwall have never recorded 32c, so the forecast is not just unprecedented, but historic.
This is insane. 32c modelled for east & mid Cornwall rivals both July and August 2022. Absolutely unbelievable that an all time high could be set in May. Cardinham is 31.6c I believe on August 11th 2022.
The all time May temperature record of 32.8°C will almost certainly be beaten tomorrow.
There is around a 40% chance that on Tuesday we’ll beat the all time JUNE temperature record of 35.6°C and set yet another new May temperature record.
Unprecedented.
@muffmasterh South West would be too broad of a description. I’m specifically referring to mid, south, west Cornwall etc.. which are always very influenced by the cold sea temps. Even 30c is a rarity for most of the county, especially at the coast.
@Official_WXUK Obviously a PWS needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, but the usually very reliable one in the village recorded a tropical night last night (20.1c)
@muffmasterh In the far north of the county at Bude it reached 36c in July 22. But local geography very often results in the far north coast being an isolated hot spot. Most of the county has never been above 31, let alone 32 so for all other weather stations it’s potentially historic.
@Official_WXUK I drove the Helston - Fal road today, had no idea the elevation was that high! Yeah in that case you’ll definitely feel the effects of it. I expect the Tamar Valley will see much the same, low elevation in the lee of Dartmoor
@Official_WXUK Thing is are we only doubting the forecasts purely because it seems ridiculous, because the cross model agreement on an extremely hot day is there. Was your 30c in July or Aug? For my area Aug 22 was marginally hotter and far more prolonged so that’s my benchmark.
It's not totally unlikely that some stations may exceed their June record over the next few days. If this were to happen, i.e. temperatures nearer 35ºC or exceeding 35ºC recorded, this would most likely be the most anomalous heatwave recorded in UK history for most of the south.
