It’s Q4.
That means one thing. Corporate Budget Season.
A good budget process should drive better business performance.
It’s a center of gravity for business performance. A true North when things get hard.
But to understand the budget process, you have to understand how it fits into the wider Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) cycle.
The FP&A cycle is made up of five core process:
The processes at the top of the table are more strategic, and get more operational towards the bottom.
But it’s how they work together that is most important.
They come together to form the annual cycle.
One process hands off to the next.
Back to the budget.
It’s about alignment of targets; from the top of the business in the board room, all the way down to the shop floor.
It’s simple to build a budget from behind a desk, that no-one buys in to. It’s also useless to anyone other than you.
It’s also simple to build a budget that gives everyone a target they have set themselves. But it won't make sense when you add it up.
A good budget process gets that tension just right. Perfectly balanced, just like a tennis net.
You have to have the whole business wedded to the individual targets in a budget, and still have it add up to the numbers you need overall. That is hard.
As a result, budgets are more about people than numbers.
A finance team that starts with that mindset, will write a better budget than one that doesn't.
I’m going to run a series of tweets over the next few weeks breaking the process down in more detail.
