Mark Twain on Catholicism and Protestantism:

First, on Catholicism:

“It being my established conviction that any Established Church is an established crime, an established slave-pen, I had no scruples, but was willing to assail it in any way or with any weapon that promised to hurt it.”

He expanded on the Roman Catholic Church as that “awful power” which, in a few centuries, “had converted a nation of men to a nation of worms” by preaching humility, obedience, and self-sacrifice to keep the commoners subdued while propping up kings and aristocrats.

Second, on his own Protestantism:

“If Christ were here now there is one thing he would not be — a Christian.”

And also:

“There is one notable thing about our Christianity: bad, bloody, merciless, money-grabbing, and predatory. … The invention of hell measured by our Christianity of today, bad as it is, hypocritical as it is, empty and hollow as it is, neither the deity nor his son is a Christian, nor qualified for that moderately high place. Ours is a terrible religion.”

So I really don’t think I’ll listen to Mark Twain’s commentary on the Book of Mormon, especially when it was prompted because Brigham Young called Twain a child and wasn’t sure if he was a boy or a girl (after Twain was unsuccessful at trying to incite Young into a debate on federal politics).
