They organized to demand fair pay for their own cotton. In response, a mob, U.S. troops, three days of hunting Black sharecroppers through the fields—and the deaths of 100 to 200+ Black men, women, and children.
This is the The Elaine Massacre of 1919.
Their crime was organizing a union so cotton planters would finally pay them a fair price for their own crops.
When white landowners found out, they didn't send lawyers. They sent a mob of hundreds, backed by U.S. troops.
Twelve Black survivors were then sentenced to death for "inciting" the violence done to them.
They organized for fair pay. The response was armed violence, a massacre, and then death sentences for the people who survived it.
The Elaine Massacre is one of the histories we documented in our book.
They tried to punish the victims and bury the story. We put the story back on the record https://t.co/V6OJtayKnF
My 74 father-in-law sat down with a bottle and told me the TRUTH.
Our mothers' generation were doing the SAME shit. The only difference is there was no Instagram to record it.
He left his first wife - cheating.
Second wife - cheating.
And the CRAZIEST one - his ex-wife cheated on him, left him, gave ANOTHER man his son.
He only found out because her own cousin snitched and said "that kid with your ex-wife's new man looks just like you."
He went and saw the kid. His blood. Another man raising his son thinking it's his.
This is 51 years ago years ago. No phones. No social media.
They were cheating with neighbors, with bosses. The only way you caught them was if you came home unannounced or a neighbor told you.
So don't give me this "women back then were loyal" fantasy. They were just better at HIDING it.
Modern women are not worse. Their cheating is just TELEVISED.
@BelgiumCooked@KnowlesYves Meh…
We had eight great years with Obama. The world still looked to the US for leadership. Biden cleaned up the Trump mess with COVID and the poorly planned withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Be objective.
It’s infuriating that they know better, but sell us out until they leave. This is what happens when politicians stop playing the game, and actually stand for their constituents. This type of politician /situation only exists when they lose their seat.
@JoeFridayOTF@Microinteracti1 Same.
I watched the “Shock and Awe” campaign in standard def when the Iraq invasion started. I even remember some journalists capturing an Iraqi platoon.
You think the grand showman would want the ratings. My first indication that things were shit.
Benghazi cost four American lives at a single compound, and Congress gave it ten investigations and two years of televised fury. Beirut in 1983 produced a commission within weeks, and Pearl Harbor had its inquiry inside eleven days. That is how a serious country treats a military disaster.
This week the Pentagon's own inspector general confirmed that Iran has damaged or destroyed hundreds of buildings at American bases in eight countries, along with dozens of aircraft. Neither Vietnam, Iraq nor Afghanistan ever saw the American footprint across a whole region hammered at once, and the public only learned of it because soldiers leaked photographs while Hegseth shrugged about the occasional "squirter."
General Caine warned before the first bomb fell that stockpiles and defences were not ready. Hegseth, a former television host, has since fired or blocked more than eighty generals and admirals, so the war is being run with the adults removed from the building.
When a Republican congressman filed eight articles of impeachment this week, the Speaker sent the House home early rather than allow a vote.

@SonnieJohnson He also spent a lot social and political capital going after people that were against big spending bills and wars.
He didn't spend any capital to go after Republicans that didn't want to fix the voting system.
@dvigilrpg@HicNonEstNam@CodyPM18002 That really is both groups in a nutshell.
The world is nuanced and a LOT of people don’t have the mental capacity to navigate the nuance. They make blanket statements in order to simply things for their diminished capacity.
