Fascinating historical testimony: Avi Pazner, the former Israeli ambassador to France, recounts a meeting in which Chirac directly told Netanyahu — whom he really didn't like — "I do not believe a word that comes out of your mouth. Your entire policy consists of provoking the Palestinians."

In Pazner's words, among "hundreds of conversations between heads of states" that he'd personally witnessed, he had "never witnessed a conversation like this one". Netanyahu "turned all white" as Chirac - himself "red with anger" - said that and after the meeting was finished Netanyahu heaved a big sigh: "Thank goodness it's over".

Immensely depressing contrast with the ineffectual and subservient types we have in power in Europe today...
