@spazgirl11@yrfatfriendfilm Oh, and one more: access to exercise. swimsuit shopping is hard because I’m fat, and because fat disabled people get stared at in bathing suits. Like a lot of people with spastic CP, I can swim fine, but no pools near me have accessible entry and also accessible showers.
@spazgirl11@yrfatfriendfilm My first experience with anti fatness from a doctor was my pediatric CP specialist orthopedist who assumed I could just diet and exercise myself into thinness, despite having total access to my medical history and what that means for how exercise does and doesn’t work in my body.
@slooterman Yeah, as a disabled parent of a school aged kid, the sense of being out of good options that you’ve captured here is very real. And I often wonder how many folks with CP even know we’re at higher risk—it took me some digging to figure it out.
@Imani_Barbarin I think this is why it’s difficult to find access info for vacation destinations and the options are often limited if they exist. I also recently couldn’t find an accessible room that also slept my whole family (me, kid, partner), because disabled parents clearly don’t vacation.
I understand that this index evaluates internal workplace culture and practices. But these companies will proudly announce that they’re a best place to work for disability while destroying people’s wheelchairs, taking away health coverage, etc. This doesn’t foster accountability.
Extremely disappointed to see multiple airlines and health insurance companies on this list of Best Places To Work for disability inclusion by @DisabilityIN. How do we expect change to happen when we reward these companies who actively harm our community? https://t.co/cCJ9m4Y4uO
The majority of domestic flights do not have accessible restrooms.
This is absolutely unacceptable.
Our Administration will soon announce a solution to help end this inequity.
@EricMGarcia I have my beefs with the American tendency to talk about citizens only as consumers, but it *fascinates* me to see that neither party has really considered that with accessibility we can spend our money places…especially the GOP.
@EricMGarcia Goes to your point about the death of the bipartisan consensus, though this is really more like clubbing it to death rather than the gradual process it has been since the 90s…
Just two #ActuallyAutistic Journalists covering #ADA33 at the White House for a conversation on transportation (but not enough conversation about trains). @Slooterman is the GOAT of this beat. I follow in her footsteps.
@slooterman If I had known how many queer women were part of our movement as a teenager and younger person, I’m sure I would have come out so much sooner. I so appreciate this piece and the work you do contextualizing our history.
We've seen LGBTQ+ rights under attack by state legislatures across the country, and now by the Supreme Court. Congress needs to do everything in our power to stop it and that's why I'm a proud cosponsor of the Equality Act.
