I wanted to give a valuable piece of advice to traders, that perhaps aren’t completely fresh to the game, but still trying to find their feet.
If you think you’ve spent sufficient time in stage 1 (discovering trading, style exploration, back testing, system development, journaling and refinement) but are still struggling, then my advice will be under the general umbrella that I consistently echo – simplify your approach, but this time I want to talk about social media.
Crypto twitter is a place where most experience both pros and cons, but we tend to only acknowledge the benefits, usually as a sub-conscious way to justify our addiction to the platform.
We tell ourselves things like:
‘I need to be on twitter, it’s part of my job’
‘I have to check twitter, it’s where I get all of my alpha’
‘I need to be constantly in touch with the space, and this is how I do so’
I imagine this rings true for many people here, defensively justifying scrolling through your phone whilst on the sofa with your partner. And this is usually where most leave it in their minds, a justification, solely focusing on what we think are the positives of being here. The reality is, there are a whole host of negatives that come from being on this app.
But today, I’d like to focus on what I believe to be the 2 main issues, and how to overcome them.
Comparison against others
This happens whether you choose to accept it or not, be it consciously or sub-consciously. We look at our performance, and we stand it up against the performance of others. Now these ‘others’ tend to be people you’re following, who have usually been in the game for a long period of time, established a foothold in the space and clocked up a nice amount of crypto over the years – making your size seem irrelevant, your performance weak, and your efforts futile. Combine this with the fact that they are trying to keep hold of, and grow, their following, which encourages them (more often than not) to only highlight the very best of their trading and investing, widening the gap between yourself and them, making what was already an outsized disparity, a now hopelessly large void between your reality and what you perceive to be theirs.
Now there may be a rare few, that for them, this is a positive, it lights a fire underneath them that gets them out of bed, makes them put in those extra hours, and keeps their motivation and ambition burning strong. But for most, I expect this is only a detriment to their mental health, reinforcing a narrative that ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘ill never get there’. Even narratives you may seem to believe are productive such as ‘I need to try harder’ are exhausting in themselves if you're already maxed out, only disheartening yourself as you settle further into despondency.
Influence
This one is a subtle poison. As traders, we tell ourselves that we can never let the opinion of others influence of decision making. After all, what good is it if your following someone else’s playbook, system, or worse – intuition? As beginning traders this is a difficult dance, we look to others to learn and grow, so by virtue of this, their opinions always influence us. But as you realise over the years that this is no longer the best path to success you tell yourself that you’ll no longer be influenced by the views of others.
You may get to a point where you truly believe that this is where you are at, but believe me when I say, first-hand, that even consciously being adamant in this regard can mean little when their views still permeate your subconscious, especially when operating on less systematic elements such as ‘intuition’ or ‘gut’.
The issue here is that as a trader, confidence is one of our most valuable tools, and having the voices of others running around your head on the opposing side of your trade is the worst thing you can do in this domain. What would normally be a self-certain approach is now clouded by confusion and doubt, leaving you weak in your conviction and oftentimes looking for reasons to get out of a trade.
If these words resonate with you, I’d suggest making what is probably a radical change to your everyday life and taking a break from twitter. If you’re a passive reader, just remove it from your phone – it’s not going anywhere, and I have a suspicion that doing so will both improve your performance and make you happier in your day-to-day. I’d suggest trailing this for a 1-month period and compare your journals from your time on to time off twitter. If you’re reading this and feeling an immediate sense of allergy to the idea, that’s understandable – twitter is designed to stimulate the mind, release positive and addictive hormones and at the base level, trigger the same response system as taking drugs. As a result, that feeling is natural – but, as with a user, we need to focus on the benefits of going cold turkey, and this will of course take some willpower.
On a personal level, I’ve played around with the idea for some time, and always had reasons not to. For starters, I’m a creator, and I don’t want to stop putting out content that may help others. On top of this, as with most of you I’m sure, it’s how I keep up to date with the space, trends and happenings. That said, I’ve decided to listen to some of my own words and give it a go myself, just to see how it affects my performance. I’ve deleted twitter from my phone and downloaded the chrome extension ‘Minimal Twitter’ to remove the timeline from my web platform and make this a post-only account.
Luckily, I have friends in the space that can keep me updated if there are any major news events, but on the whole, expect it to be a positive thing for my trading performance. I’ve always wanted to really see how I operate with blinkers on as am aware that at times, I myself even fall into the above category where I truly believe that I’ve reached a level impermeable to influence, but in reality, speaking to other traders, glancing over the views of others on the timeline and having these opinions seep into my subconscious decision making process ultimately affects how I operate, even to a small degree.
If you’re not ready to try this, don’t force it, I would only do this after you feel like you’ve got to a certain level in your understanding and by no means am I trying to downplay the value in learning from others, this is how I, and everyone else starts out. But if you feel like if you were to give an objective analysis of your twitter usage, and that in an honest pro v con scenario, you think you’d benefit from giving this a go, then you may as well try. I expect you’ll be pleased with the results.
