This is inaccurate. They competed in 4 seasons in 4 years. By the old rules, they were out of eligibility. They literally did not even have to apply for the draft. The new rules only came out after the draft.

@TomMarsLaw I think recent rulings on the Ivy League show that this is not true. Teams in the SEC were free to choose their conference. In fact, two teams recently chose to join this conference from a different one. If they do not want to follow the rules, they can join another conference.
