What happens when kids shipwreck on an uninhabited island?
In 1965 a group of Tongan schoolboys were marooned on the remote island of 'Ata, and it turned out very differently from William Golding’s cynical bestseller 'Lord of the Flies'.
The real Lord of the Flies is a tale of friendship and loyalty; one that illustrates how much stronger we are if we can lean on each other. It's a story of what some scientists call 'survival of the friendliest'.
After 15 months, when an Australian captain discovered the six boys, they had "set up a small commune with food garden, hollowed-out tree trunks to store rainwater, a gymnasium with curious weights, a badminton court, chicken pens and a permanent fire, all from handiwork, an old knife blade and much determination."
While the boys of ‘Ata remain largely forgotten, Golding’s Lord of the Flies continues to be a staple on school reading lists. I don’t take issue with that, but I do believe students also deserve to hear about the one time real children were stranded on a real island—because their story is a starkly different one.
Luckily, a movie adaptation is in the works, with the 'boys'—now in their 70s—actively involved to ensure the events are depicted as accurately as possible. Tracking them down and sharing their story remains the highlight of my writing career 😊
@campbellclaret@RoryStewartUK@RestIsPolitics Please don’t spoil your otherwise excellent podcast by giving platform to a puppet-dictator. To cover what’s happening in Hungary, you should invite Peter Magyar, the first viable challenger for over a decade. Sorry about the footie, hope the hangover will carry on vs Hun 😉
