The network is weak on a physical basis. Not fast enough for payments. Very few txs are fully shielded - so, the bulk of the networks' activity is vulnerable to tracing.
Prior to the internet, electronic business was done over VANs (value added networks.) These were bespoke sequestered networks - exactly like blockchains.
Bridges were proprietary too.
The Internet killed VANs with free, native interoperability.
