Excellent work itemizing the early church's references to Penal Substitution!
A friend recently drew a good insight about how trauma tends to increase dogmatism. I wonder if part of the uptick of extremism right now is the amount of trauma in the world. I am not sure what to do about this but it helps give you more compassion along the way.
One of the challenges of the age is to see things rightly--all the decline and disorder of our decadence--but not to lose our hope, humor, or joy.
And I don't think any belief system is better suited to accomplishing that than historic Christianity centered on the gospel.
Thoughts on a Ph.D. in theology:
1. The requirements for the Ph.D. are less intensive today — one needs to go above and beyond the requirements of the Ph.D. to be able to seriously contribute to scholarship (i.e. learn more languages than required, read more books than assigned).
I was wrong politically. Though I’ve never fully sided with either party I often placed more hope in one party’s polices more than I should. I’m learning whether Right or Left…politics do well to manage systems, not souls. 🧵
Appeared on The Perspective w @Mike_Sherbino to talk "Conspiracy & The Bible". Started off funny but got serious quick w controversial topics that might make both right & left uncomfortable. I just hope some honest dialogue can help heal the division.

I have not blocked many but those I have blocked fall into 2 categories: aggressive fundamentalists & aggressive leftists. They are v. similar to each other: close minded, poorly educated, in the grip of ideology, lacking intellectual self-awareness & prone to "gotcha" tactics.
A big problem with dismissing Aquinas is that if you do there is no reason to read Augustine either. After all he was also a pre-Ref. "Roman Catholic." But Calvin cites him approvingly many times. Does that mean C went astray too? Where does it end?
It ends in sectarianism.
