You’re seeing the difference between Toboni player development and Rizzo player development in real time.

It’s early, but guys like Luis Perales and Riley Cornelio have looked eh or downright not good.

Jared Simpson and Erik Tolman have looked great.

The Rizzo regime would’ve had all their eggs in the basket of big names like Perales being the saviors. It’s them or bust.

The Toboni led Nats built a system that actually invested as much in late picks like Simpson and Tolman, because the highest rated guys aren’t always the ones that pan out. It’s not a perfect science.

Now they have two young lefty relievers that look promising even as some of the higher profile names have looked underwhelming.

Depth matters. Depth wins.
