physicist specializing in software for data analysis, mostly for an LHC experiment. he/him, will use singular "them" to address others w/o any stated pronouns
@rdmorris Best guess the John and Daria Barry Foundation, but not enough IRS filings to be sure. Fund managers, but seem to be closer to old-school philanthropists, not toxic modern VCs.
@TheDisproof@MichaelEMann @GeraldKutney It has been apparent for decades that most climate change deniers must be wrong for the simple reason that their arguments are mutually contradictory.
My denier relatives were unimpressed--it isn't something they cared about.
@PJEvans66030270 @emptywheel There's something bizarre about Trump's claims that Harris lied about working at McDs. Most McDonald's are franchises, just as most Trump-labelled properties have licensed his name--yet he's oblivious to how record keeping works in that business model?
@Makelegs@Ceist8@MarcEHJones@MikeHudema We are certainly capable of having a major influence on the climate, and that in turn influences the weather. It is essentially certain that we are inadvertently causing significant changes in the climate.
@Makelegs@Ceist8@MarcEHJones@MikeHudema The effects of CO2 on earth's radiation balance are obvious in earth's emission spectrum. The effect of adding more can be calculated directly from the measured properties.
Denying what we can plainly see is not using your brain.

@RonFilipkowski He pardoned people who could have testified against him. That used to be corrupt by definition, now it’s an official act subject to absolute immunity from prosecution. That’s what actual “banana republic” looks like.
@emptywheel It's like an ad from some dystopian tv show--and meanwhile, Trump's frequently stated policies are pretty much guaranteed to result in massive agricultural supply chain disruption with major cost of living increases.
@ClimateRealists In the GHG IR absorption bands, the earth radiates at a higher altitude, which means at a colder temperature and less energy radiated. So GHGs act similarly to insulation. We can see this directly

@BennoList@energysymminc@Ceist8@MikeHudema We can also see the effect, very directly, in earth’s emission spectrum (and the observations agree very well with the calculations).

That ought to be convincing for anyone who understands elementary thermodynamics.
@ConSys@scruztiger@ShksprnDngrMnky@newscientist Even at current CO2 levels, more CO2 pushes the center of the emission spectrum to higher, colder altitudes, and adds to the tails. This can be calculated from the observed absorption spectra and basic physics. While it looks small, it isn't negligible.
@ConSys@scruztiger@ShksprnDngrMnky@newscientist Solar activity hasn't been increasing recently, and ocean CO2 concentrations have been rising. These are simple, direct observations.

Congratulations on bringing up an example that so clearly illustrates the difference between regional and global temperatures.
@TammyMcMul8726@Ceist8@jmlestes@NASAClimate If undersea volcanoes were a significant contributor to global warming, two really, really obvious questions:
1) Would this have measurable consequences for the oceanic temperature profiles?
2) How would it cause a trend?
@CherylGrainger4@LeilaniDowding@Ed_Miliband@labour More like 10% per year. We can tell it's from fossil fuel burning from the changes in the carbon isotope ratios. CO2 also isn't at an all time low, it is increasing at a rate unprecedented in human existence, and rapid increase means high adaptation costs.
