@reustis @cajuntaper @telelouisiane J'ai été au bal, even if seems like it would be j'étais. LA French doesn't always employ "aller" (je suis allé.e) for "I went." The song IS "j'ai été au bal," BUT there might be versions where the singer sings "j'étais" because that makes sense too (I was at the bal.)
