It is extremely important to distinguish between faith as the ground of our justification (wrong) versus faith as instrument of our justification (right).
Justification is grounded upon the obedience and satisfaction of Christ; that is the “stuff” of the righteousness we receive from Him. Faith is merely the (sole) instrument—the empty hand—by which we lay hold of His righteousness.
If you construe faith as the ground rather than the mere instrument of justification—if the stuff of our righteousness is our believing—then you make faith into a work and the Gospel into a new law.
This excerpt from Horatius Bonar explains this distinction well.

“Faith is not our saviour. It was not faith that was born at Bethlehem and died on Golgotha for us. It was not faith that loved us, and gave itself for us; that bore our sins in its own body on the tree; that died and rose again for our sins. Faith is one thing, the Saviour is another. Faith is one thing, and the cross is another. Let us not confound them, nor ascribe to a poor, imperfect act of man, that which belongs exclusively to the Son of the Living God.”
@ClintArcher At 14:45 Will talks of a sermon he heard at a ShepCon. I believe he is referring to Josiah Grauman in 2025. I was at this session at ShepCon 2025 and this truth really stuck with me. The whole sermon is worthy of listening to again and again. https://t.co/tMwAUttAoc (24:44)
@Swan@hurleyburt Thank you @hurleyburt for your great and clear insight on No Second Best. It will be sorely missed as my favourite and go-to Bitcoin podcast. The Lord bless you and your family as you move forward in your life. Hebrews 10:23.
Shoutout to the @gracetoyou team for making John MacArthur's entire sermon archive available for posterity.
The more we all miss his voice the more we are grateful to you for your years and for some of you, decades (@Phil_Johnson_ et al.) of serving alongside him.
" Dear prayer partners,
I hope and pray that you are doing well and growing in the grace of Christ. This is not merely a greeting, but my heartfelt desire for you. Of even greater significance, this is also God’s great desire and purpose for you.
In Romans 8:29, Paul wrote, “For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren.”
How should we respond to this great truth? The answer is found in Matthew 5:48, where Jesus said, “You are to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
Considered outside of its context, this demand should shake us to the core because we know that none of us are perfect or will be perfect until the day we stand before God in glory.
However, it will not trouble the believer who understands the grace of God in Christ. When we become convinced that we are fully and immutably loved and accepted in Christ, we can strive for greater sanctification, even perfection, because we know our performance in no way determines our standing before God.
We are loved even when we fail, even when we fall.
When I was a little boy, I admired those circus performers who walked from one high pole to another on a tightrope. It seemed exhilarating but far too dangerous to attempt. However, I thought I could manage it, even enjoy it, if there was a safety net below the tightrope.
Similarly, we can attempt Christlikeness, even to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect, when we are convinced the grace of God will always catch us.
Be encouraged. You are greatly loved.
Learn to walk in that love and aspire to grow in sanctification without fear.
Set your goals extremely high — even to be conformed to Christ and perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect — because your standing and worth before God are not determined by whether you attain them.
Christ settled that issue long ago on Calvary.
Your brother,
Paul"
Been thinking about the tragic and evil shooting of Charlie Kirk. I didn't know him personally and never met him. But he was doing this country a great service counteracting the death cult brain washing that is going on in almost all public universities. Many today want to see the United States overthrown with sexual perversion, anarchy, drug abuse, and totalitarian control. Kirk opposed this and they killed him because of it. My deepest sympathy and condolences go to his wife, children, extended family, friends, and all who grieve his loss.
But let it be clear in all of our minds that Charlie Kirk, though physically dead, still lives! He is right now standing in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, blameless with great joy (Jude 24). As Jesus said to Martha who was grieving the death of her brother Lazarus in Jn. 11:25-26, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” And we must all respond as Martha did to Jesus in vs. 27, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.” All who know and love Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will see Charlie Kirk again along with the holy angels and saints of all the ages (Rev. 5:11-14).
Daniel 12:2-3 speaks of the resurrection of all who die saying, “Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt. “Those who have insight will shine brightly like the brightness of the expanse of heaven, and those who lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever." Charlie had insight into the gospel. He relentlessly lead many to righteousness. He now shines in heaven.
Jesus spoke of the resurrection in John 5:28-29 saying, “Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment." There is an eternal heaven and there is an eternal hell. Everyone in the world is headed for one of those two eternal destinies. Everyone will be resurrected, either to eternal life in heaven with Jesus Christ or eternal destruction in the lake of fire.
I appreciated Charlie Kirks bold public stance declaring Jesus as Lord and King and the need for everyone to repent of their sin and place their faith in Jesus Christ to save them from the wrath of God to come. If Charlie could speak to us from glory right now, he would tell us this world is passing away and all its lusts (1 Jn. 2:17). He would tell us to place our faith in Jesus Christ. The world needs to both hear the gospel and believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
It is interesting that in the sovereign plan of God, sometimes those who shine the brightest, die the soonest. So it was with Jesus, the perfect, sinless, Son of God. So it was with John the Baptist whom Jesus described as the greatest man ever born of woman (Mt. 11:11). Many have died young because they lived and proclaimed the truth. Read The New Foxes Book of Martyrs for many examples. Psalm 139:16 reads, "Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them." Our days are numbered and the clock is ticking for each of us.
Though most do not like to think about dying, the death rate is still holding at 100%. As the author of the book of Hebrews reminds us in Heb. 9:27, "And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment." We are all going to die. We don't know when we will die. We are all going to stand before the judge of heaven and earth, Jesus Christ. Luke writes in Acts 17:30-31, “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.” We can either stand before Jesus Christ trusting in our good works and perish, or stand before Him trusting in His good works, and have everlasting life.
When he shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in him be found:
dressed in his righteousness alone,
faultless to stand before the throne.
(Stanza from the hymn by Edward Mote, "My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less")
We must not place our faith in this world, in our country, our government, politics, science, or medical doctors. We must not trust in ourselves, our wisdom, money, strength, or good works either. We must place our faith in and trust in the prophesied Jewish Messiah, Jesus Christ, the Son of David, who was born of a virgin (Isa. 7:14; Mt. 1:23), lived a sinless life (2 Cor. 5:17; Heb. 4:15), died on the cross for our sins (Isa. 53; Rom. 6:8-10; 1 Cor. 15:1-4), was buried (Mt. 27:57-61; Jn. 19:41-42), rose again from the dead on the third day (2 Cor. 5:14-15; 1 Thess. 4:14), and who is returning again in glory to strike down the nations who will not bow to His sovereign Lordship (Rev. 19:11-16).
We see much evil in the world, much injustice, lying, oppression, and murder, but the Righteous Judge is coming. As the Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10, "For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed—for our testimony to you was believed."
Jesus the King is returning to judge the living and the dead. Flee to Jesus Christ today to find forgiveness and justification before God, or meet Him as judge later. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He alone can rescue you from the wrath of God to come (1 Thess. 1:10). See you soon Charlie Kirk!
"And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him."
(A stanza from the hymn by Martin Luther, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God")
Our hearts are heavy, yet rejoicing, as we share the news that our beloved pastor and teacher John MacArthur has entered into the presence of the Savior. This evening, his faith became sight. He faithfully endured until his race was run.
2 Timothy 4:1-8
Christian, God knew the worst about you when he first accepted you, far better than you did. He accepted you for Jesus’ sake, and will not change that basis of his acceptance now.
@kamalravikant@naval 13 The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.
14 For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13, NASB)
