After my lab session today, I decided to go through my notes and I came across my jottings on the teaching of Ibn Khaldun in his Al-Muqaddimah —The reason why empires break and lose its grounds.

Painfully, the Jilli market incident and the dichotomized blame-sharing game that ensued after the bombing was striking for me. It is clear that we have a problem when a tragedy that should unite us in grief becomes a weapon for North versus South finger-pointing.

Out of the three reasons Ibn Khaldun mentioned, the one that aligns best with our current situation as a country is “al-inqisamat al-hizbiyyah.” This refers to those deep partisan and factional divisions that eat into the soul of a nation.

Ibn Khaldun argued that a nation stays on its feet because of something he calls “Asabiyyah” or social cohesion. It is that shared feeling of being one body. But when al-inqisamat al-hizbiyyah takes root, that glue starts to dry up. We stop being a single body and we become a collection of groups that value their camp over the truth.

The thing is, Ibn Khaldun saw this as the beginning of the end for any civilization. He observed that once a people start to split into these factions, they lose their ability to govern themselves. The energy that should go into building the city and advancing science is wasted on internal politics.

I believe many of you saw this played out when I called out Alex Barbir for his divisive rhetoric on this space. What happened afterwards? My Nigerian brothers abused the hell out of me for it. It was mind-blowing to see Nigerians supporting a foreigner against their own government just because of partisan hate.

This is exactly what Ibn Khaldun meant. When the internal split is this deep, people would rather see the house burn than see their political rivals succeed.

This is why the message on my profile, “Truth over Tribe,” is not a coincidence. It is an intentional stance. We have some of the most resilient people on this planet. Our strength and resolve are unmatched. We innovate in the middle of chaos and we find ways to thrive where others would give up.

However, this partisan rot is making all that effort feel like running on a treadmill. We are working hard but we are not going anywhere because our individual brilliance is trapped in a system of factionalism.

If we do not fix the internal split, the decline he spoke about becomes inevitable. We have to value the survival of the collective over the victory of the faction.

It is about realizing that if the boat sinks, it does not matter which side of the deck you were standing on. We need to stop the finger-pointing and start focusing on the glue that holds us together.
