I am writing to express my appreciation for the opportunity to have being the keynote speaker at the Stakeholders Sensitization Seminar on the Enforcement of Fundamental Human Rights of Persons with Disability. The event was expertly organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ilorin Branch, in collaboration with ADEHABB Resource Enterprise, conveyed by Olatunji Abibat .
As a member of the Internet Society's Special Interest Group on Accessibility and a dedicated advocate for sustainable policy on Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), I was delighted to deliver my paper.
Human rights are universal—a truth that belongs to every individual, regardless of their circumstances. Yet, for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria and beyond, this ideal often falls tragically short. They continue to face systemic discrimination, exclusion, and various forms of abuse that strip them of their dignity and deny them the full spectrum of their human rights.
The abuse of PWDs in our country is a heartbreaking reality. It manifests in physical and emotional violence, economic exploitation, and a consistent denial of access to education, healthcare, and political participation. These challenges are often fueled by societal misconceptions and a lack of awareness, creating immense barriers to their well-being and inclusion.
It is crucial to acknowledge the strides our government has made. The enactment of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018 was a landmark achievement. This legislation, along with the establishment of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), provides a legal foundation to prohibit discrimination and guarantee essential rights. This is a vital first step, but as we’ve seen, the true test lies in implementation.
To create sustainable, lasting change, we must look to global best practices while rigorously enforcing our own policies. This means:
✓ Strengthening Enforcement.
✓ Embracing Universal Design.
✓ Prioritizing Inclusive Education.
✓ Fostering Economic Empowerment.
✓ Building from the Grassroots.
The journey toward full inclusion is ongoing. It requires more than just laws; it demands a fundamental shift in our collective mindset, a consistent political will, and a dedicated commitment of resources. By doing so, we can build a society where every PWD lives free from abuse, fully exercises their rights, and contributes their immense talents to our shared progress.
It was an honor to contribute to such a vital conversation. The commitment shown by all stakeholders to upholding the rights of persons with disabilities is truly commendable. I am confident that our collective efforts will pave the way for a more accessible and equitable society.
Thank you once again for this wonderful opportunity.
