As Canadians we hear China is our adversary and we hear expressions like ‘strategic partnership.' Let’s lay out what this means.
China is Canada's top cyber adversary according to CSE. It uses soft power blended with sharp power (coercive influence that falls btwn soft power and hard power) to erode the Liberal International Order (LIO), the rules-based system of norms, institutions, and alliances that has provided Canada freedom, prosperity, and security for decades.
PM Carney recently stated in Davos that the Canada-China partnership sets us up well for a "new world order." The LIO is changing and under strain, eroded by revisionist powers like China, Russia, and Iran, but it is not gone. Canada is still part of its core institutions like NATO, Five Eyes, WTO, and UN frameworks.
A real strategic partnership with China would require deep, long-term alignment including cooperation on human rights and defence. That is not realistic given PRC cyber espionage, repression of critics, and economic coercion. China systematically undermines Canadian sovereignty, targets institutions, and contests the very rules-based order Canada depends on. What Canada needs is limited, selective trade with strong guardrails, not elevated rhetoric that risks misalignment.
Here are 9 ways China threatens Canada today.

Getting a Grip-en
Canada needs to get a grip on its defence strategy before it gets a Gripen.
Gripens have a role as a 4th gen fighter but only in support roles.
Three priorities:
1. Winning = not dying.
A bunch of low cost planes that have big radar signatures and will get picked off does not help Canada scare Russia and China. Gripens are flying coffins in 1/1 combat with Russian Su57s or Chinese J35s. No one gives the Gripen a chance on those engagements. Unlike Columbia which can line a Gripen up against cartels and other national security threats where it is superior this isn’t remotely true of Canadas threat vectors.
2. US interoperable alignment
- We are the single most important US aligned ally. We share our airspace and border protection with NORAD and new arctic threats from China and Russia with their 5th gen aircraft. And we need to be fully interoperable with US air force capabilities.
- Gripens may have a support role but not ‘instead’ of the most important interoperable 5th gen fighter in the planet. The F35 is a UFO compared to the Gripen. And Canadian firms and thousands of workers make a couple million per plane. Finally, the bizarre talk about running costs for the Gripen v the F35 is like talking about the running costs of an advanced super car - and an F1 car. They run on different costs because they are totally different platforms with different purposes.
3. Strategy not politics
- why are we actually doing this? Is this a true strategic review with our closest allies engaged or is this a culturally and politically insecure Liberal party process to try to use our military choices to act out against the USA out of frustration with Donald Trump?
Canada has to get its act together and do better than this. We don’t put our fighters into sub standard air platforms against superior Russian and Chinese and American jets out of political petulance. We don’t let them air on the sidelines or be demoted to high risk support functions for the USAF simply because we cheaped out for political reasons that will be irrelevant when these jets arrive.
Why does interoperability with the USA matter so much? This video on relative scale of global airforce capabilities does a good job of helping visualise why the US airframes are globally dominant part of our NATO advantage over Russia and China.
And why Canada needs to get aligned and give our forces the best capabilities in the planet.
Which can include Gripens for some functions but let’s get the F35s done.
It’s way past due and now more expensive because we let it get political already once a decade ago only to end up right back where we are today.
Enough.
We know about the importance of protein consumption in relation to preventing the muscle loss and frailty of aging.
But an overlooked area of a relatively high protein intake is its effect on the body's endogenous antioxidant system, of which the most important single component is glutathione.
Glutathione levels decline with age, and this decline leads to increased oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and damage to cellular components such as mitochondria.
Restoring youthful glutathione levels reverses these defects, whether in lab animals or humans.
Glutathione is a tripeptide - in other words, a protein.
When humans decrease their protein consumption, even just to a level that health authorities deem "safe", their antioxidant status declines and their susceptibility to oxidative stress rises. [PMID: 15213035]
When glutathione levels are restored in elderly people, their ability to metabolize fatty acids becomes more youthful, fatty acid blood levels decline, and insulin sensitivity increases - this is an important longevity factor.
Glutathione levels were restored in this case by supplementing the amino acid glycine, and the amino acid carrier n-acetylcysteine.
But these are just components of dietary protein. Whey protein is especially rich in cysteine, collagen protein is rich in glycine.
So, how much of the oxidative stress and functional decline in aging is due to low protein intake?
Potentially, a lot.
There's good evidence that protein requirements for optimal health have been significantly underestimated, and may in reality be 50% higher than current guidelines. [PMID: 19841581]
Add to that the fact that many people don't want to eat protein: they prefer sugary and carb-laden factory food.
Many in the anti-aging space believe that lower protein intake is better for slowing aging, and this may be exactly wrong.
In lab animals, restoration of glutathione levels extends lifespan, and in humans reduces oxidative stress.
And this can be done by getting sufficient dietary protein.
Is Bill C-293 Canada's "Vegan Act"?
Bill C-293, a private member's bill, stands as one of the most unreal pieces of legislation I have witnessed in my career. If enacted, this bill would empower public health officials to shutter facilities identified as "high-risk," including meat packing plants, during a pandemic. It would also "mandate" the consumption of vegetable proteins by Canadians.
This bill sailed through Parliament with alarming ease, underscoring the prevailing dysfunction and disconnection within the body. Under normal circumstances, such a proposal would falter at the first reading. The Senate now faces the challenge of deliberating on this poorly crafted legislation, which proposes to give the government sweeping powers to dictate production and dietary choices during a pandemic.

‘Artemisinin alone is fairly effective at killing cancer cells. It kills approximately 100 cancer cells for every healthy cell, about ten times better than current chemotherapies’. Oh well then, of course that will be front-page news. https://t.co/nSjJeGBFh1

We can benefit from eating more protein at once than previously thought.
"These findings demonstrate that the magnitude and duration of the anabolic response to protein ingestion is not restricted and has previously been underestimated in vivo in humans."
