Cranberry in a can, blob style, is the best and most respectable cranberry dish for Thanksgiving. Your cranberry chutneys and other culinary hijinks involving whole cranberries are inferior to blob cranberry in a can. This is an official decree.
The NOT Arcane Texas Fact of the Day:
It is February 24th. 189 years ago today, William Travis wrote the most famous document in the annals of Texas history. Remarkably, given the conditions under which it was written and sent out from the Alamo, Travis' letter still exists.
Commandancy of the Alamo—
Bejar, Fby. 24th 1836
To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World:
Fellow citizens & compatriots—I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna—I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man. The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken—I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls. I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch—The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country—Victory or Death.
William Barret Travis
Lt. Col. comdt
P.S. The Lord is on our side—When the enemy appeared in sight we had not three bushels of corn—We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bushels & got into the walls 20 or 30 head of Beeves.

Regarding what's happened to how we cast our votes: Does no one value the civic ceremony of people going to a polling place and watching each other exercise the franchise? It is--or was--one of the most inspiriting experiences of common citizenship.
I love that my kids think that 8 am on Friday morning while I’m trying to get ready for both homeschool co-op and then a 6 hour drive to NM is a good time to form a tin whistle, spoons, and piano band.
Everyone knows the first sentence is clunky at best. A better sentence, one that is grammatically correct, would be: In English, it is permissible to end a sentence with a preposition.
However, permissible does not equal correct or even best practice.
Here endeth the lesson.
It is permissible in English for a preposition to be what you end a sentence with.
The idea that it should be avoided came from writers who were trying to align the language with Latin, but there is no reason to suggest ending a sentence with a preposition is wrong.
Modern people, especially urban people, think that anything which has got itself printed has somehow passed an examination and received a diploma; has somehow, in fact, shown itself to be true.
It’s National Work Zone Awareness Week! Please remember to move over and slow down so people like my dad—a @TxDOT employee of 30+ years—get home safe. His grandkids appreciate it! #NWZAW#besafedrivesmart
