@GavinNewsom Will my mother be allowed a vaccine? She has been here since the beginning of COVID because of my pregnancy (now baby), she hasn't returned due to guidelines around flights.
I have long admired @timnitGebru for her brilliance, moral courage, clear voice in speaking up for what is right, & influential scholarship. It is truly terrible that Google would do this.
In this thread, I want to share some of Timnit's work I love

Within the field of tech medical devices, I'm seeing a resurgence of interest in incorporating causal inference into their AI/DL work which actually has been a huge shift from just 2 years ago. It's been promising to see.
This question annoys ALL students (and professors) of ML, but they are afraid to ask. Thanks for raising it in this "no hand waving" forum. Take two causal diagrams:
X-->Y and X<--Y, and ask a neural network to decide which is more probable, after seeing 10 billion samples. 1/n
Thanks for inviting me to speak @BJKStephenson! This was really fun to talk about and I really enjoyed being able to share my narrow slice of health tech!
Grateful to be able to end this week with friend/colleague @datajyang from @clover_health crashing my virtual office hours to share with my class Bayesian approaches in data science that optimize interventions in #HealthTech
We (epi & biostat folks) have a major conflict of interest when it comes to evaluating COVID research that I’m not sure we’ve fully acknowledged. 1/
As a working mother, that gave birth 4 months ago in the pandemic and is now back at work with 2 under 5, I feel the veil of sanity slowly slipping from my grasp. There is no answer here that isn't systematic.
"617,000 women left the workforce in September alone, compared with only 78,000 men, according to government data released Friday"
The impact of this pandemic on working mothers has been brushed aside, but it will set us back decades.

@CALFIRECZU thanks for all your work, what's the best way to donate to the San Mateo event center for the evacuees? Should those in San Mateo city prepare to need to evacuate?
Big Basin Redwoods State Park (Santa Cruz Co.) "sustained extensive damage” to “park’s headquarters, historic core and campgrounds."

Videos from @StanfordAIMI Symposium are up! I spoke on why we need to expand the conversation on bias & fairness.
I will share some slides & related links in this THREAD, but please watch my 17-minute talk in full (the other talks are excellent too!) 1/

@PHuenermund @RobGuinness@netflix@eliasbareinboim@JMateosGarcia Thanks! For context, I've personally used do calculus in genetic studies and currently have an accepted paper focused on reducing FDR in cases of extremely large p. I have seen a lot of practical issues in the application which makes it hard to generalize to automated studies.
