I hate to say it, but my worst fears about the regulated psychedelic model are coming true, as shown by the new Oregon psilocybin data. Clients’ average household income was $172,000 in Q1 of this year, which is up $35,000 from Q1 2025 and nearly double the state median. The vast majority of them were Caucasian, and a troubling 100% of licensee applicants since Q2 2025 identify as white. We already knew that a single psilocybin session in Oregon runs from $900 to over $5,000. So, it likely surprises no one that Oregon served only 952 clients in the first quarter of 2026. That’s the lowest quarterly figure on record in the program’s history, representing a 37% drop from the peak of 1,509 in early 2025. Only 22 service centers remain open, down from 36 in early 2024. And the treatment is about to get even more inaccessible and burdensome for everyone. Now, Oregon is planning to fold psilocybin services into its Medical Marijuana division to cover a budget shortfall, and they're proposing doubling licensing fees. Service centers would pay $20,000 a year; facilitators would pay $4,000 to work within this system. Those costs will land squarely on clients' shoulders. Frankly, this is what I’ve been saying about the state-regulated psychedelic model as it currently exists in the US. It’s wildly exclusive by nature. People seeking psychedelics deserve better. In particular, they deserve access to containers & facilitators who actually match their intentions: Wellness and self-exploration were the top motivations reported by Oregon clients, who cited general health, expanded consciousness, and creativity. Mental and emotional health followed close behind. This confirms something else that many of us have been saying for years (to put it mildly): Psychedelics are not only medicine for the sick. They’re tools for healthy, curious seekers. I created the Psychedelic Coaching Institute because I sensed that neither the medical model nor state licensing regimes are designed for the psychedelic demand that exists around the world now. More and more people are looking for skilled, ethical practitioners to guide them, and they’re looking outside of narrow aboveground models. They might be looking for you… that is, if you’re committed to holding transformation with skill and courage, informed by hands-on practice, personal experience, and mentorship from the field’s leaders. In that case, you may be looking for the Psychedelic Practitioner Certification, for coaches, clinicians, guides, and future practitioners of all professional backgrounds. The next cohort kicks off one week from today, and there’s still time to join while global demand surges (link in comments). So, what do the new numbers from Oregon tell you?
