“Better is possible. It does not take genius. It takes diligence. It takes moral clarity. It takes ingenuity. And above all, it takes a willingness to try." - Atul Gawande
“When you're playing a point, it has to be the most important thing in the world. And it is. But when it's behind you, it's behind you.” - @rogerfederer
Honestly can’t stop thinking about this study.
Dancing is *dramatically* more effective than our best attempts at treating depression, pharmaceutical or not.
It clearly has *massive* psychological benefits.
But how often do you dance?
Do you ever do it sober?
Did your therapist recommend dancing?
Are you on SSRIs but never dancing?
If this replicates and is taken seriously it’s potentially life changing for so many people.
I gotta dance more.
Christmas is a time when families get together and celebrate. With the brutal war going on in the Middle East, especially the death and destruction in Gaza, this year we get to Christmas with very heavy hearts and we share the pain of those families who are grieving the loss of their loved ones. Please do not forget them and do not get used to their suffering. Merry Christmas.
VO2 max & zone 2 cardio
Some things you should know:
(00:24) Higher cardiorespiratory levels as measured by VO2 max have been consistently linked to reduced risk of mortality and longer lifespan.
(00:37) Going from a below-normal VO2 max (for your age group and gender) to a low-normal is associated with a 2.1-year increase in life expectancy. Going from below-normal to high-normal VO2 max is associated with a 2.9-year increase in life expectancy.
(01:34) In another study involving only men, for every 10-unit increase in VO2 max (i.e., 10 mL/kg/minute), there was a 17% lower risk of death from cancer and a 11% lower all-cause mortality.
(03:21) Zone 2 cardio alone doesn't guarantee VO2 max improvements.
(08:50) The Norwegian 4x4 protocol for increasing VO2 max: 4 minutes hard (85%-95% max heart rate), 3 minutes at a lower intensity (similar to zone 2), repeat 4x.
(09:43) The 1-minute on/1-minute on protocol for increasing VO2 max: 1-minute going all-out, 1-minute rest, repeat 5-10x.
(11:00) The Cooper test is a great way to estimate your VO2 max.
Sorry to interrupt your scrolling but this is just a friendly reminder that your time on this earth is extremely limited and everyone you love is going to die one day so maybe you should put the fucking phone away and go do something meaningful.
What I thought being a surgeon was:
- operating
- saving lives
- using exciting tech
What I've learned being a surgeon is:
- listening more than talking
- setting an example
- reducing suffering
Meditation relies on an accumulation of sub-stress threshold sessions (sitting with our own thoughts) in order to train our mind's capacity for thinking clearly, returning to presence, and maintaining composure through the onslaught of modern stressors.
meditation is like zone 2 training for your mind.
Zone 2 relies on an accumulation of sub-aerobic threshold sessions to build a more robust aerobic base and train your mitochondria to better handle anaerobic conditions...
Be the biggest fan of the people you care about.
Defend them.
Keep the hope alive.
Make them look good.
Catch them when they fall.
Be there when they need you.
Root for them unconditionally.
Help them accomplish their dreams.
A 22-year-old follower recently messaged me asking for career advice.
Here are the 5 pieces of advice I shared:
1. Swallow the Frog: This is one of the greatest "hacks" to get ahead early in your career. Observe your boss, figure out what they hate doing, learn to do it, and take it off their plate. Easy win.
2. Do the "Old Fashioned" Things Well: There are simple things that still stand out. Look people in the eye, do what you say you'll do, be early, practice good posture, have a confident handshake. It sounds silly, but these things are all free and will never go out of style.
3. Work Hard First (& Smart Later): It's in vogue to say that working smart is all that matters. Wrong. If you want to accomplish anything meaningful, you have to start by working hard. Build a reputation for hard work—take pride in it. Then you can start to build leverage to work smart.
4. Build Storytelling Skills: World-changing CEOs aren't the smartest or most talented in their organizations. They are exceptional at: (1) Aggregating data and (2) Communicating it simply & effectively. Data in, story out. Build that skill and you'll always be valuable.
5. Build a Rep for Figuring It Out: Early on, you'll be given a lot of tasks you have no idea how to complete. There's nothing more valuable than someone who can just figure it out. Do some work, ask the key questions, get it done. People will fight over you.
Embrace those 5 pieces of advice and I guarantee you'll stand out and be on the right track.
