@onehappyfellow Research mathematics doesn't and has never really mattered in the last century for its own sake; rather, mathematics is a human capital mill that generates good abstract thinkers. The primary function of math in universities is the calculus industrial complex.
@spicey_lemonade@nikilravi Most people do? I only developed ability to read math textbooks on my own and do exercises well after a year or so of proof based math. Do you read math textbooks and do the exercises on your own?
@EgoistMarxist@CTSH1_pc Would not have been fun to do full time, but 2-4 hours shifts twice a week were relaxing for me since it was mostly repetitive work and I could listen to music. Also was making like $14 or $15 an hour, which helps!
@CTSH1_pc Lots of first jobs are low hours and are fun/growing experience. My first job was in 8th grade working at a grocery store for like 5-7 hours a week. Did not need the money for essentials (parents are rich) so it all went to fun stuff! I wanted to do it, parents didn’t make me.
@LouisTheInterim@souljagoyteller Or, as opportunities have become more widely accessible, the people with the most potential get selected into elite institutions earlier then they did previously.
@miniapeur@usrbinishan Your point is only that vector fields must have the same dimension as the underlying manifold. This problem is not harmless in Euclidean space; R^3 vs R^2 valued functions on R^2 would have the exact same distinction that you present here.
@chronolink84@wsferries Where did they shit-talk the employees? Everything they said seems to be a statement of fact. If it reflects poorly on the employees, that's on them.
@LinkofSunshine She outran Biden by 18 points in 2020! And some of the polls have her outrunning the gov race by like 18! All you need is the same ticket splitters from 2020 to do it again for the same person.
@mauddweeb Even means balanced here, not divisible by 2, so an empty pile fails unless you can ensure the other has 0 heads. It must be guaranteed, not just reasonably sure.
@franzsherbert This has really annoyed me with the recent discourse about stopping subsidised loans for low-paying undergrad programs; no one needs an early childhood education major to become a preschool teacher! The only social work credential that matters is an MSW; undergrad doesn't matter!
@JohnTeufelNYC Did you read the policy? Do you really think that Harvard philosophy grads make less than the average high school only grad 4 years after graduation?
@fuzzyechoess@agraybee I’m not a frat dude lol. I just went to a school where Greek life was heavily marginalized by the admin and the athlete house parties became the place women warned each other about. The Frats, when they threw, were a lot safer and well regulated than the alternative big parties.
@tealtalk@Nate_Cohn The president and senate races were 18 points apart in the actual results in 2020, and guess who was running for Senate! Collins is just that much of an overperformer.
@USA_Polling If you unironically believe this, you should believe that the 2020 election in Maine was electoral fraud. Biden and Collins each won by 9 points in the SAME STATE.
@longhornbruce1@PanasonicDX4500 You are reasoning backwards from your conclusion. Pollsters care way more about their job, which is to be accurate, than "helping Dems" (and it's still not clear that posting positive polls does help them). If you've talked to them, you'd know they hate overestimating Dems.
