California was the first state in all of America to pass a state-wide ban on pet stores selling animals from puppy mills. This greatly increased the opportunities for shelter dogs to be adopted which decreased overcrowding in shelters. #39canimals

Lastly, I learned the importance of peer review this quarter. Writing a paper without any outside review may seem correct and objective to yourself, but slight biases are always there that we ourselves cannot discern. Having other perspectives is crucial. #WhatIlearnedin39C

One of the shocking things I learned was how invertebrates (animals without a backbone) were treated differently from vertebrate animals. Invertebrate animals are not protected under the Animal Welfare Act, which enforced vertebrates to be treated humanely. #WhatIlearnedin39C

Most importantly, I was able to approach animals with a different perspective this quarter. Instead of viewing animals as lesser beings to be dominated, I viewed them as equals, as living beings living on Earth. #WhatIlearnedin39C

Prior to this quarter, I have not had much experience building and adding onto a website. This quarter, I learned how to use Wix, and learned to create a portfolio, write blogs, create different pages, and create an interactive page for my AP. #WhatIlearnedin39C

The Octopus Teacher is a piece of media that portrays octopuses as cognitive animals similar to humans. Although this is a good first step, governments still need to take action in preventing octopus. #39canimals

Seeking to farm octopus as a means of meeting the demand of consumers would ultimately backfire, as octopus require a specific diet of crab, mackerel, or squid that would ultimately place pressure on the dwindling supply of oceanic animals. #39canimals
