@robmc538380346 @CentralBylines@BylinesScotland@NWBylines How many jobs can be done from home? About 40% absolute max. HS2 usage was expected to be 70% leisure. Leisure industry jobs by their very nature can’t be done from home. Good luck with an election manifesto of “Stop travelling!!!” Help ppl travel as green as possible ie rail.
@robmc538380346 @CentralBylines@BylinesScotland@NWBylines Yes we have a line & it’s full esp at southern end. It cannot accommodate any more trains & can’t be upgraded any more. Demand for rail travel continues to grow. Best solution was to build a new line to modern standards, divert expresses to it & reuse freed up capacity.
@robmc538380346 @CentralBylines@BylinesScotland@NWBylines And substitute that for more “catastrophic damage” from road building albeit on a larger scale? Your home and all the modern amenities you take for granted were once building sites as were the existing rail lines.
I have signed this petition, written to my MP and to the Mayors of Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire. Perhaps Labour's promised enquiry will delay land sell-off to those hoping to flip it for a quick profit.
@Kelltheblue@NWBylines@AdamBienkov This is why we need HS2. You can’t improve the number of N-S trains without it as there’s no capacity to operate any more trains.
Last run of a fabulous long weekend. D8568 H 18:07 Bridgnorth-Kidderminster. Noise unlike any other preserved diesel loco. Just can’t stop smiling ATM.
@paulshields@pie1883@drwhopodcasters First ABC series a bit difficult - I don’t like the “adultery eps” Santa Claus/Works With Chess - boring. But Bromsgrove Venus is really good, Must Be The Architecture promises much & a shame we can’t have other 3-and-bit audio only eps.
@Comsolveit@JonathanEley Every advance in communications tech has only resulted in more demand for travel. Did people stop travelling after the telegraph and telephone were invented?
@mrfunex @kazikazikazii @tneedle6@thfc_cody@joncstone Works if trains have similar acceleration, speed and stopping patterns. It’s why tramways eg Manchester Metrolink can run 6 min headway or less - all trams stop at all stops. Mixed stopping patterns and 125mph sharing w 75mph trains - doesn’t work.
@tneedle6@thfc_cody@joncstone Can’t. That’s the entire point. Platforms at Man Picc, Liv Lime St, Euston… can’t be lengthened. South end of line is absolutely full. No paths to run any more trains. Already quad track much of the way. Adding more lines impractical. Build new line on new alignment best sol’n.
@matthewhodg@25kV AIUI the 365s don’t have any means of attaching diesel engines to the vehicle underside so any bimode on them was a complete non-starter.
@petersgate_tap@NWBylines@DamianCummings Stockport extension on the drawing board & in principle easy to do through extension of East Didsbury line. But where will funding come from?
Let’s go!! 🔥

@Revsimmy@DavidPa03067190@jacquep The GCR London Extension was NOT built to French gauge. Maybe a slightly more generous loading gauge than earlier UK lines but this was a result of Board of Trade guidelines evolving. It’s an urban legend.
@jacquep@FsmDog Can’t lengthen platforms at key London termini such as Kings X or Euston or Man Picc or Liv Lime St. London situation a legacy of Victorian dictat rlys from North not to enter City itself, stop at Euston Rd. Hence easier to build new lines to modern stds & rules, aka HS2.
@Revsimmy@DavidPa03067190@jacquep The GCR wasn’t built to continental loading gauge as there was no such thing at the time and even if it had have been other parts of the system (Woodhead) weren’t so it would only have been any use between London and Sheffield.
@Penmcgregor@NWBylines@Greens4HS2@PaulMBigland Taken from sources and if you disagree with those sources write a rebuttal and/or get those sources to correct their assertions. Again I don’t want to argue with you but when I make claims I cite sources to back them up.
“Claims of massive damage to irreplaceable ancient woodlands are exaggerated” - the final article in my series on #HS2 for @NWBylines. Big thanks to @Greens4HS2 as well as @PaulMBigland for useful pointers towards the actual facts and evidence.
