This week, I officially started my new position as Assistant Professor at @WU_econ.
I'm thankful for the rewarding experience at CEPE @ETH in the past years, and I'm looking forward to continuing to work on environmental and transportation topics.
Last Friday, we had the 2nd Vienna Applied Micro Economics Workshop! A huge thank you to Pedro Martins, the presenters, and all the participants for making it an insightful and engaging event. Looking forward to the next one! #Economics#ViennaWorkshop
The negativity bias of media is so strong:
Headline: "Chinese solar panel boom threatens Pakistan's debt-ridden grid"
Factory owner quoted in article: "These cheap Chinese solar panels feel like a gift from God"
Our new open-access #textbook in #energy#economics will be published in January 2025 instead of July 2024 as planned. This change is due to a cybersecurity incident experienced by Cambridge University Press last June.

Another shoe just dropped in the ongoing Dan Ariely scandal: JMR, a top 4 marketing journal, has issued a formal “Expression of Concern” for Mazar, Amir, & Ariely (2008), the infamous Ten Commandments study

One week ago @ProfDavidDeming wrote in @TheAtlantic that we should break up Big Econ. I share Deming's desire to reform economics. But I think his explanation for the profession's obsession w/its elites—an insufficient focus on solving real-world problems—misses the mark. A 🧵 1/
Though a bunch of journalists were interested initially, many didn't publish references to our research.
One journalist of a very highly esteemed newspaper even literally said to me: "people aren't interested in good news."

I think these bean-counting citation metrics are unreliable and we should not use them.
In the 14:00 session at #EAERE2024 I will be presenting our paper on purchase subsidies and vehicle tax discounts for electric vehicles, and on the impact of solar PV on electric vehicle adoption. Hope to see you there!
In a nutshell, if everything in the media is presented as entertainment and in the most sensationalist way, then democratic discourse is impoverished, ultimately making it difficult for democracy to survive. This is what we are seeing today with the emphasis of the mainstream media centered on attention-grabbing headlines, emotive content, entertaining snippets and a search for the most viral content.
Today in the 16:15 session of #EAERE2024 my colleague Suchita Srinivasan will present her JMP on how a personalized vehicle comparison website can enhance the adoption of energy efficient motorcycles in Nepal.
It's really great work, don't miss it if you are into dev&env econ!
