In Brazil’s 2022 presidential election, Jair Bolsonaro (Bannon’s friend) misused the Federal Highway Police (Polícia Rodoviária Federal, or PRF - a national agency responsible for traffic enforcement and crime-fighting on federal highways) to try to stop voters from reaching polling stations.

They targeted roadblocks and checkpoints (often called ‘blitzes’) in regions - especially the Northeast - where Lula (Bolsonaro’s opponent) had strong support and had won big in the first round. Meanwhile, areas where Bolsonaro was ahead saw no interference.

The goal was clear: disrupt turnout among likely Lula voters by delaying or blocking buses and other vehicles carrying voters to the polls.

It didn’t work. Bolsonaro lost the election anyway. But they were partially successful. He is now in prison. He was convicted of attempting a coup d’état. The three key officials who helped orchestrate the PRF operation - including top PRF leaders - were also arrested.

The lesson is simple: When a leader tries to weaponize federal law enforcement to suppress votes in areas that favor the opposition, it often backfires legally, politically, and in the courts.

Americans should keep that in mind when hearing calls to deploy ICE agents near polling sites this fall.

@davidhogg111 They do not need to be “around” polling locations. They can make operations around the city, which will impact how many will arrive at the voting places. Exact same playbook used by Bolsonaro in Brazil on the Election Day. Target areas full of opposition supporters.

@indieoldlady Tem sim essa divisão e é bem clara em algumas empresas aqui. Você acaba escolhendo se quer continuar como “individual contributor” (swe, staff, principal) ou se segue a carreira de gestão como vc disse. Tivemos um principal bem senior que ficou uns 8 anos nesse cargo.
